Report: Ricky Rubio's father says son may remain in Spain
By J.E. Skeets
Leading up to the NBA Draft there was chatter of Ricky Rubio's preference to play in a big market. Well, Minnesota certainly isn't one, and according to the Spanish sports site Marca.com, the father of the new Timberwolves point guard says his son may remain in Spain for a few more years rather than play in the NBA. Talk about cold feet.
Ricky's pop, Esteve Rubio: "Ahora mismo, es muy probable que Ricky se quede uno o dos aņos en Europa." Translated, it says, "Right now, it is possible that Ricky plays a year or two more in Europe."
"Tenemos que hablar con la gente de Minnesota ... y ver lo que pasa, porque, a estas horas, podemos estar en Minnesota o en otra parte", declaraba." Loosely translated: "We are going to speak with the [people, staff] of Minnesota and see what's happening, because, in some hours, we may be in Minnesota or in another place."
Earlier in the evening, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported that the Knicks were working hard to cut a deal with the Timberwolves to acquire Rubio. New York's a big enough market, si? The flashy teen was one of three point guards taken by Minnesota in the opening round of the Draft, with new Wolves general manager David Kahn snapping up Ricky at No. 5, Jonny Flynn of Syracuse at No. 6 and North Carolina's Ty Lawson at No. 18, though he was subsequently traded to Denver.
Decisions, decisions ...

Okay?
I concur sir. playing in the NBA is a gift. so whether or not your in New York or Minnesota, LA or Albequerque, New fucking Mexico. You dance with the team that brought you. The Minnesota Timberwolves offered you a chance to play basketball for them while they heap large portions of money in your general direction. If they say you gotta play outside in December...you do it. You hear me Speedy Gonzalez?
The tremendous thud we heard last night from the draft...Rubio's ego...I realize that he is an 18 yr old kid...but all we've heard about for months is "how mature" this kid is for his age...well...I don't see it...I remember how excited KG (and other young guys) was to be drafted...this kid is clueless to the honor of being a top 10 pick...go back to Europe Ricky...be happy there...

Not surprised at all TWolves f*cked up should have shopped Rubio & kept Ty.

When Rubio fell to them, they should have taken Rubio and then with #6 taken either Curry or DeRozan. Someone who is a scorer because Rubio cant score, he can only dish out assists. Instead, they take another great PG in Flynn. Tried to out think the room and screwed themselves up.
On The Herd, Colin said that Kevin Love tweeted after the Flynn pick, "what the hell are we doing?"

Not even hate on Flynn I knew it would be issues because Rubio wants to play for a big market. I thought a deal with NY would be perfect select Rubio for NY & NY selects Demar for the TWolves. Than your backcourt is all good with Flynn/Ty & Derozan.

Kevin Love tweeted today that Rubio will stay in Spain. Way to blow a draft pick Minny. And Rubio, you are nothing more than a wuss. You wouldn't hack it in the NBA anyway.

LOL, that works too...
Kobe didn't have to pay millions of dollars to play in the NBA either, so he's worse.
Look, even if he went number 1 overall to the Clippers it'd take an endorsement or two for him to just break even financially. Do you guys not get that? Joventut scewed him over bigtime, and if he doesn't want to live in Minneapolis, I don't blame him. Why not wait till next year when he has to pay less, gets drafted higher, and likely goes where he wants to go. I'd do the same thing. And it's not like the Wolves are a great franchise to be in either...they don't even have a coach...

Yup.
It's one thing to play for free (or even have to pay money)...but at a place you don't want to be?
Screw that.

Then his pussy ass shouldn't have entered the draft. Simple as that. He knew there was a possibility that he'd be drafted by a small market team, that's part of the risk of entering the draft.
This dude has no right whatsoever to diss the Wolves like that. Oh wait, my bad I forgot,

They're the ones who can't do shit as an organization. They lucked into Kevin Garnett, after nearly being sold. They had Kevin McHale for 14 years, and they had a "secret" free agent deal with Joe Smith. Their GM drafted 4 guards, the season after they got Kevin Love, who was the same position as their best player. And need I say their GM was once a sportswriter and did producing work for NBC? Great credentials. And once again, no coach. Come to think of it, who WOULD want to play for them. Swedd, being drafted in the top 10 isn't an honor, it's just a check. Too many busts to say it's an honor. All Star Games are honors. All Rookie teams are honors. He told them to stay away because he has to pay to play for them, and they didn't. Their bad, not his.

Teej...the T'Wolves have his rights for at least 3 yrs. so he can't reenter the draft...his buy out (from the last reports I heard last night) has been reduced to 3 million and Spainish IRS said they'd spread it out overs years (I don't knoww howw many)....$500,000 can be paid by drafting team...the first two years of his contract (both guaranteed) pay him at least $5,652,000 compared to the $92,000 he made with his Spainish team...so where exactly is the hardship?

From what I've read, they don't necessarily have his rights...but I'm not fluent with the CBA. We need Tamb for that.
Where did you see it being reduced to 3 mil?
He'd get paid over 100k this year, and I still maintain that to have to pay to play for Minny isn't worth it. Plus housing, food, car(s), and suits for the NBA dress code. Living as an NBA player isn't cheap.
Teej...I'm looking for the wire release where it was reduced (I think it was ESPN but I'm still checking)...I'll post it when I find it...but the kid will not be playing for free...he just does not want to play for the T'Wolves....I understand that but he was coming into the league with a bulls-eye on already...this only makes it worse...
The Knicks are in discussions to get him and the pay scale is the same for the #5 where ever you play...again...I'm seaching for the post but that was it...reduced to 3 from the 6 million...any team can pay up to $500,000 (was said on TV during the draft) on buy outs...so he is only going to pay 2.5 over time to Spainish IRS...

Teej...the T'Wolves have his rights for at least 3 yrs.
I posted the same thing earlier, but then checked the CBA and it's not the case. From Cox:
In any of the above cases, if the team does not sign the player in the allotted time, the player can enter the next draft. If the team that selects the player in the next draft doesn't sign him either, he becomes a rookie free agent.
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q42
This situation is just very rare because few people would turn down guaranteed millions when they might enter into the same situation the next year.
I don't know how this accounts for Fran Vasquez, other than the fact that he didn't enter the next draft.
If Rubio doesn't reenter the draft, the Wolves would have his rights until one year after his current Euro contract expires.
By the way, I also think Rubio and his family are punks. Again, they knew the situation before they entered the draft. If he was that concerned about his current contract negating his NBA paycheck, he should have waited until the current contract is over.
The draft is an essential part of keeping the integrity of and parity in the league. Guys can't just tell a bunch of teams not to pick them.
thanks dnb...Teej...here is one of the stories that indicates his buyout was reduced to 3 million...I'm looking for the second one I read...
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=13064
This one indicates it is anywwhere from 3-8...a little honesty would help...
http://www.rototimes.com/article/2009/6/Offseason-Overview-Minnesota-Timberwolves
Teej...this one speaks to the fact (also in sacbee and espn but basically the same report) that Rubio did not sign his contract only the Addendum which gave him a raise last year...so there were questions that it would not even stand up in court...

When you are going to enter the NBA draft, you do so knowing that a team you might not like will draft you. So stay in Europe and dont enter the Draft if you cant hack it. But dont enter, and then wuss out when you get picked by someone other than whom you dream of playing for. Play out your Rookie Contract and then go as a FA to whereever the hell you want. But if I was David Stern, I'd lay down a law. You enter and get drafted and refuse to come, you dont ever come back. Just stay content making your Euros and forget the NBA.
Granted, Minny should have taken steps before the draft and known what they were doing, so they are stupid for doing what they did. But that does not take any of the "wuss" factor away from Rubio. If he gets traded and plays in the NBA, I hope he gets the crap beat out of him, gets man handled, and his career ends before he's even old enough to drink a damn beer. Walter Herrmann and Lexy should slap him around a little and tell the kid to grow a pair.

In principle I agree that he should play for who he's drafted for when he enters the draft...but as DNB showed the team is taking a risk per the rules when they decided to pick him. Especially when you're talking a top 5 pick.
I didn't know it'd been reduced; you're right that "playing for free" doesn't come into play now and a lot of the argument is gone.
But Minny isn't totally the victim here.

I'd be pissed, but that still wouldn't take away the Bobcats' obligation to cover their asses.

I agree spectre...Minny drafted him and he's their problem...but like many I think they drafted him to trade...and that's why they drafted Flynn...Flynn was their guy but they saw value in Rubio...if they get a good trade for him was it a dumb thing to do?

Yeah, the reason I mention Roy specifically is there were rumors he didn't want to play for us, yet many fans criticized the fact that we didn't pick him.
That was the word but I'd have drafted him anyway...a fight with him would have been better than what we ended up with...just my opinion...if nothing else we should have traded down for an asset or another pick that year...

Minny's problem now is that virtually anyone trading for his rights will get a pretty good deal. Minny will not get the value that a #5 pick deserves. Everyone knows that Rubio will stay in Europe and Minny gets nothing for that wasted pick. Someone will likely get him for 70% value. They were stupid not to have even discussed matters with his agent and Rubio well in advance as they were picking Top 6 and he could have fallen to them anyway. They did not do their homework. If they got negative feedback from Rubio, they should have discussed with another team behind them in the draft of a deal "in the event" Rubio fell to them at #5. I'll bet they could have had a deal in place as a contingency. They could have made out like bandits.
Just all around bad job by Minny with #5. How Jay Bilas thought Minny did a great job in this draft is beyond me. But then, he thought Charlotte did a very good job, with which I agree.

Look, for any player coming out of college, the end of a European contract, or from freaking nowhere I agree that they have no right to say they won't play anywhere, because they're getting paid tons of money to play a game. I don't like Steph Curry, Kobe, Roy, etc for that reason.
However, no matter how big or small the amount, if you have to pay to play somewhere, you should get some input in where it is. Rubio made it clear well before the draft he wasn't going to pay to play in a Minnesota, a Memphis, or an OKC. He wanted big city, big names at the games, and places to go outside the game. Does that make him ideal, no, but I totally respect what he's doing because there's no reason to pay to play somewhere you don't want to. If I'm Blake Griffin, I may not like the Clippers, but they're paying me lots of cash and it's all mine (except for Uncle Sam's portion). If I'm Rubio, well, I likely won't make any money before what would be the end of my Joventut deal, I'll be playing on an awful team, and no one will know who I am. Why would I pay for that?
