Since I'm less than enamored with 12, Derrick is the only saving grace from the draft. From the the things I looked at, it seems that Derrick could turn out to be the special player I wanted to come out of this draft, since we passed on one at 12.

His numbers at Xavier this past season were damn impressive, especially his shooting percentages at 51% from the field, an eye opening 43% from 3, and a decent 74% from the line. He was 2nd on the team in PPG, 1st in RPG, 3rd in SPG and BPG.

The kiss of death is that Chad Ford "loves this pick for the Bobcats," but then again, he can be right once in a while, right?

LB on the main site...

(On Derrick Brown)
Our scouts had him 20th on our board. We brought him back for a second workout so Rod (Higgins) and Michael (Jordan) could see him again. We went into the draft hoping to get a 2, a 2/3, or a 3 man. Now, we have a young backup three. He’s long, he can handle it, and he can shoot it a little bit. We got two character kids. It is almost like last year. When we tested out the rookies D.J. (Augustin) and Alexis (Ajinca) last year, they were really high, top kids. It is keeping with what we were hoping for. We had no idea to expect him to be there.

He was 20th on our board? Assuming our scouts aren't total idiots that's a heckuva steal for a 40th pick.

Looking forward to seeing him play.

Lets just ponder that thought for a moment - shall we?

Only kidding. We do need a back up for Crash so hopefully this kid pans out. I don't know him from Adam, but hopefully he does end up being a steal for us.

Interesting he compares himself to Tayshaun.

He has a very solid game and if he comes to camp determined to make the team he will make the team...I think he's a good pick (and a definite steal at #40)...I'll be glad to have him here...

NBAdraft.net gave us an A for our draft...this is their quote...

"These are two great, ready-to-play picks for a team that desperately needed some help on the wings. Henderson should be a long-term starter and Brown provides great versatility, capable of guarding three positions. They also sold Oklahoma City the rights to the No. 54 pick, Robert Vaden."

Even Chad Ford gave us a good draft rating...B+
CHARLOTTE BOBCATS GRADE: B+

http://espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/nba/lrg/trans/CHA.gif Round 1: Gerald Henderson (http://insider.espn.go.com/nbadraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2009&playerId=19028) (12)
Round 2: Derrick Brown (http://insider.espn.go.com/nbadraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2009&playerId=19254) (40, via Nets and Thunder)
Analysis: The Bobcats had a nice, solid draft. Henderson is a really good fit in Charlotte and should eventually be able to replace Raja Bell. He's a great athlete and he can really defend. Brown was a great value in the second round, a terrific athlete who can play both the 3 and the 4.
Overall the Bobcats helped themselves with solid picks who may not be superstars but who could both be in the league a long time.

I think we really did get deeper...

I am pleased with him.
Seems to be a Larry Brown player, and the fact he is a Power Forward that can shoot threes means he can help us match up with Orlando.
I wish we could have gotten Blair here though....

Ford actually gives us a B+ for the Draft. And he hates Charlotte.

didnt know a whole lot about him. watched some videos, read a couple things. so im no scout on this. But ... he looks to have a really slow release on his shot, and maybe a bit slow on the draw. However neither is Boris Diaw, and he sure gets the job done. And while he may seem slow, hes very atheletic jumping and playing above the rim better than Diaw already.

I like the pick, seems to be good value that late and he will be learning from some good 3/4 tweeners in Diaw and Wallace. I gotta say I'm pleasantly pleased with this draft. maybe a B-

I am pleased with this draft. Sure Terrence Williams and Derrick Brown would've been better...but Henderson is still a pretty solid player for the spot. At least we didn't pull the trigger on someone like Tyler Hansbrough (as much of a fan as I am, he will not be a good NBA Player).

From TSN:

There was a surprisingly long list of accomplished college players who jumped into the draft early and wound up waiting into the second round. The best prospect of that group is Xavier SF Derrick Brown, who has everything a team could want except a taste for dominance -- and how important is that when drafting a player who figures to land between fourth and ninth in a team’s rotation? Charlotte got a steal in taking him at 40."

Good Draft, not great but we filled our needs. D. Brown I think will surprise alot of people that don't know anything about him. DJ and Raymond both get into the lane very well. That has lead to Diaw having the best 3pt % of his career. He had ALOT of open shots. Brown has a nice touch and we do end up with alot of open 3's even by Wallace. Nice to have someone else that can hit shots. Far as I know he's the same height as Diaw but with a 7 foot wing span. I think i'm most happy with him at SF but with certain line ups the PF isn't hurt with him out there. There'snot alot of film out there for him, but i like what i see so far.

And He's a lefty with a mini post game. I would really really love to finally have someone with some low post moves other then Wallace. Diaw has a minipost up game too, but his court vision allows him the dribble and find the open man rather then look to score. The bench is looking pretty strong now. LB just may make this a NBA team after all. It's amazing how two drafts and three trades changes a whole team.

One of those trades being a bad one, too.

I think D. Brown comes in hungry...makes this team...bust his butt(Crash Jr with a better jump shot and an attitude)...and we're talking for years about "what a steal"...

Who Hollins /Carroll for Diop? I don't think it was that bad. Hollins had energy, but really that was it, Carroll was having a horrible season and has been dropping off in production for a while. Diop atleast give's this team a big body in the low post. He's not that bad and he did have some big play's last year.

I was thinking more the Vladi trade, but both were somewhat iffy.

I do not want to see this guy sit on the bench this year...I'm not talking starting or rotation...but he needs 8-10 minutes a game and he'll help down the stretch...he already knows (and plays hard) "D"...I think the only way he becomes one of the "major steals" is if he just gets a little game time...as many games as possible...

I'm having trouble finding good video on Brown. I've read that he has a slow release on his jumper....I found this video of his work out with the Kings. His jumper doesn't look that bad to me

Kat...I saw (I think) two tapes that nba tv ran on him...his release did appear slow to me...these were Xavier game film so you might want to search Derrick Brown Xavier and see if you can find the vids...also...teams feared him driving by their players so they backed off from him a good bit and that gave him plenty of time to shoot from outside...the space he was given may have helped exagerate his release...every once in awile Crash does the same thing so I doubt it is a big deal...

But since it was a knock against him (while in college) it is probably something he worked on before his workouts...I understand he works very hard to improve his game...

I've seen those video's, But thats not really much else out there. Atleast nothing I've found so far. Either way his jumper didn't look that bad. I've seen worse. But from what I've seen he seems like he's ready to play on day one. I'm a lil curious as to what he'll play more of PF or SF. Since he's basically the same size as Diaw but with a 7'2 wingspan, I'm guessing PF isn't pushing the limit. I've read he has quick feet and is freakishly athletic. Vlad is better suited at SF. So that would be Wallace, Vlad, Martin and Brown. With only Ajinca as Diaw's back up. He posted one of the top numbers in bench press at the combine with 20 reps of 180 pounds. So he's a strong athletic "undersized" PF with monkey arms.

...and he has a very quick first step Kat...which with his size is kinda scary...

I think Radmanovic is a huge improvement over Morrison. I agree that his contract isn't perfect for us but on the court only, there is really no comparison between Morrison and Radman.

What is the average size for a NBA PF?

As I look at the Bobcats depth chart Diaw is really the only one without a suitable back up right now. I'm thinking Brown is big enough and strong enough to play PF in the NBA but i haven't seen any live action footage yet. The PF hole might be addressed during FA but if not I don't think this team loses much keeping him at PF.

We need a banger though, because neither Boris nor UPS can play that type of PF well, that's why we want a Wilcox or Leon Powe.

Wilcox I can live with...Powe is coming off a season ending knee injury isn't he?

I'll agree this team needs a banger, but we don't have alot of money to throw around at people. So unless we can off load Vlad or Nazr I don't think there's enough money to wave in people's face.

Powe had a freak knee injury, but unlike May he's tough enough to get over it. He's already gone through the knee troubles in college (both of em), and he's overcome all odds to be where he is.

And yea, we need cap space, maybe a S&T with a pick and Vladi?
