View Full Version : How and Why I think Ricky Rubio will play in the NBA next season

First of all, I don't think the Wolves picked Ricky Rubio thinking he would EVER play for them. I believe they were excited to draft him because they knew a team out there would give them alot more value in a post-draft trade.
Now alot of analysts thought that the point guard that would be traded would be Jonny Flynn from Syracuse. I think he will be the starting Point Guard next season in Minnesota. During the draft yesterday I thought Minnesota may keep both picks and try to play both of them. But then rumors began swirling that Ricky Rubio may return to Spain instead of coming to Minnesota. Ricky's father said this after the draft and this information was reported by Marca.com.
Today, the Minnesota Timberwolves had a press conference to introduce their new players. There was no Ricky Rubio. Early in the morning rumors said that the Wolves are going to listen to deals and try to trade Rubio. The New York Knicks and Donnie Walsh then stated that they would contact the wolves about acquiring Rubio. And just a short time ago RealGM.com reported that the Ricky Rubio discussions have begun and Rubio could be on his way to New York soon. A deal with New York would likely include Nate Robinson and/or David Lee going to Minnesota while Rubio would come to NY. Mark Berman wrote in his New York Post blog today that "The Knicks privately believe Rubio wants to be in New York and his agent Dan Fegan will work hard to make that happen,". Berman also said that Rubio's camp is very hopeful that Minnesota strikes a deal sending Ricky to New York.
Now what does this all mean for Rubio playing in the NBA next year? It seems complicated but it is actually very simple to me. it seems like if Rubio remains on the Wolves roster, Rubio will return to Spain and play for DKV Joventut. BUT, if Minnesota sends Ricky to New York, he will play and he and the Knicks can work hard to work out Rubio's buyout. the Knicks euro-scout, Kevin Wilson, is also friends with the family and could help with the buyout.
I know alot of people probably think Rubio is acting like a jerk for being a foreign player that most Americans know little about, BUT, I want you to think about it on Ricky Rubio and his families side. Rubio's buyout is currently worth $6.6 million. If you were Rubio and you had to pay that to play in the NBA, wouldn't you want to play in a city you liked and a team that you will not battle for minutes with another top rookie point guard?
As of right now this whole deal is about 50-50 as far as whether Rubio will play here or in Spain next season. If a deal goes down, as I think it will, it would be to New York as Ricky wants and he will play in the NBA next season.

Thanks for Reading!

1) Why would the Wolves want David Lee? That's 3 starting caliber PF (along with Love and Jefferson). They need backcourt depth or a Center. Not another PF.

2) I'm pretty sure the NBA is a little bit bigger than Rubio and Joventut. If he didn't want to play for the Wolves he should have A. not put his name in the draft or B. waited until his contract with Joventut ran out. He needs to grow up and realize that he's in a position that millions of people would kill for.

You don't see Steph Curry acting like a little bitch because the Knicks didn't get him.

Steph Curry doesn't have to pay 6.6 million dollars to play in a city he doesn't want to.

Neither does Rubio. Nobody made him enter the draft THIS year and nobody made him sign such a long deal with Joventut knowing he would eventually enter the draft.

He's an immature little punk bitch. Face facts.

Yeah. You can't have guys entering the draft and then deciding not to play for the teams that draft them. The league depends on crappy teams (which are often in crappy markets) getting talent through the draft. You can always switch teams after a few years of playing for guaranteed money, regardless of whether you are trash or not.

He didn't think he would be ready, nor did he think his buyout would be this huge.

You go stand in his place. Tell me you wouldnt be pissed to play in Minny?

Then he shouldn't have entered the draft this year. Plain and simple. And reports are that his buyout is closer to the 3mil level and that he won't be in a lump sum so don't even pull THAT crap. Especially when he's going to be making $10.5 mil through his base salary not counting incentives or promotions and other deals.

Tell me you wouldnt be pissed to play in Minny
uh....................................... no?

I'll gladly switch places with him if he's going to be a whiny little bitch about it. Hell, I'd do it for free. Give me a break.

You act like the Wolves aren't a good, up and coming team. I'd love to play next to Jefferson, Love, Ellington, and Flynn.

I meant ready when he signed that long term deal with joventut...

And you aren't an all-star caliber player either...jefferson's always hurt, love's to small to be a starter on a playoff team, and flynn plays his position...

Neither is Rubio, nor would he be for the duration of his rookie contract, which would end when he's, what? 22?

Like a few others, I have no sympathy for him at all. If everybody thought like him, there would only be four franchises.
