View Full Version : Waiting for Godot... I mean a PF.

I'd like to take this opportunity to begin a new cycle of who-will-we-get-to-play-PF? With no disrespect to Diaw, who will be our starter, we're going to need a legit bruising PF.
Some have suggested Gooden, but he comes with a lot of headaches and has been accused of being a space cadet.
There are some mildly interesting people on the UFA list, none that are big difference makers but some who could contribute.
Any ideas?
I was wondering what people think about Shelden Williams?

Be nice. Again, I know he's not a game changer, but can he bang?

I dunno, ask his girlfriend.
Seriously though, no. Shelden Williams is garbaggio
Chris Wilcox?
But isn't Brown supposed to be both?

I was wondering about Wilcox too.
Brown seems very interesting, but I want a big, rugged legit 4 on the bench, the kind of guy who came in and defend against bigger PFs.
Brown is not a banger
True.
we could also go after RFA Leon Powe, who is one of the most underrated and toughest players in the NBA. Although he has had knee problems, he plays through it (unlike someone else we know) and has been a major part of the Celtics success. He can play C too.

Leon Powe would be nice. If only we could get Tinky-Winky........
Wilcox is pretty good but he's mainly an offensive player, not so much a banger

I'm assuming Boston will try to resign Powe, but who knows.

Theyre wayyyyy over the cap though so if we give him 5 mil + (which he's easily worth, he could start), they probably won't go after that. Maybe less.

Boy, if Houston wouldn't have matched our offer to Carl Landry....

Another reason I hate Morey...but still love what he does.
But I'd rather have Leon...

Well you ARE a pseudo Celtic fan.... ;)
Gortot would seriously be a nice pickup for us. Big athletic guy that will bang.

It's not because I like the Celts, its because Leon talks to people and lets you in on stuff, is a cool dude, and fits our need perfectly. He's better than Landry. Look at his numbers when he starts...20+ multiple times this year when he was in the lineup. And he could teach Boris and Mek how to be a man...

I was thinking Samuel Beckett or Cliff Odets. In which case, if we follow Odets advice, we did right by picking Derrick, and we should strongly consider Wilcox.
You started it, dnb!

This thread is pretty moot if you guys are expecting the type of players you've been naming. Come up with a way to get some capspace so the full MLE doesn't put us into luxury tax and then we can talk. Higgins stated pretty emphatically that we aren't getting near it this year with a borderline playoff team (and rightfully so).
While Higgins said the team has cap exceptions, he cautioned that fiscal responsibility is a big consideration.
“We're going to have some restraints,” Higgins said. “I don't think it's fair for us to get anywhere close to the luxury-tax number if we're just trying to get to the playoffs. And we're not there yet.''

Seriously, as many tarheel fans that are on this board I can't believe Shellhead hasn't been shot down yet. Minimum contract? Ok, but I'd seriously rather just bring Jake Voskuhl back. A center that was methodically dominated by Sean May in the paint in college doesn't deserve anything more.

DNB has a point tho in this thread. We are weak on the frontline. There's a reason Derrick Brown was the 40th pick. I'm not counting on him for any production at all. We won't be signing Leon Powe, but he's exactly the player we need. This teams past trust in Sean May and failure to build a frontline has become seriously aggravating.

That's just it: when you're talking players on the cheap, you're talking pretty bland talent. So, that's what I'm wondering about. Who is cheap but can help us?

It's going to have to be something we don't expect like the Juwan Howard for vet min last season. I also think we'll most likely bring back May who I suspect will be a lot better this year (his gravy train is in deep jeopardy) with a 1-2 million deal.
Not that I don't totally agree with this need, but at least we have the option of going small/fast with both Crash, Vlad & Brown able to be a PF in spurts. That's not quite as bad as our SG spot which the only alternative to Raja was Felton...who we also played major minutes as a PG.
Slim pickings in the UFAs at PF (at least ones that might be willing to come play here)...we have 10 guys under contract and two rooks coming in...and I doubt the team goes more than 14 players this year...so...
Lexy needs the full NBADL (IMO) court time this year...and most of us feel we need a "big" with some kind of face to the basket game....and LB wants a "big" combo type guard...
Cheapest options I see are bringing Juwan and Dontell back...does that really get the job done?

Frye/Charlie V would be ideal but I'd settle for Wilcox an athletic banger backing up Diaw.

The irony is that our PF position is the best that it has been in the franchise's history. We certainly can stand to have a banger, but I gotta agree with spectre that the wing position (SG most specifically) was the biggest need. We still could stand to get a knockdown shooter.
I would be fine with bringing back Howard and Jefferson. And for the jokes make about Voskuhl, if we had the opportunity to bring him back or May, I would take Jake. He knock down the jumper and he is nasty and will give some hard fouls.
I don't see the appeal of Dalembert unless one of Diop or Okafor was not on the team. It's hard to justify having 3 guys like that on a roster unless they go under some offensive transformations.
