View Full Version : maybe what we are doing here is actually a good thing

lets think about it, the salary cap is going to decrease significantly over the next couple seasons, there is a potential luxury tax level proposed for the new cba where rather than paying 1 for 1, teams would have to pay $2 to the league for every $1 above the level. Yes, we have some shitty contracts, (Nazr, Radmon, Diop) but losing okafor will help us significantly when the price for much better free agents comes down. Plus radmon and nazr have what 2 years left each? by 2011 we will have significant flexibility. those holding poor contracts into the future will pay the price either by quality of their team or financially, and god knows we cant pay it, so perhaps we have a much better chance at continually succeeding, maybe not this season, but within the next few years. this is exactly why we cannot settle to sign felton for $10mill+. He may be worth it now (debatable) but into 2010, 11, 12 etc he simply wont be that caliber of player unless something drastically changes with his game. its hard to keep pushing it off, but the effects of lower cap and new cba would be devastating to a team that has overspent deeply into 2014 and on... im sure rod and mj recognize this, despite our impatience and desire to become a contender today.

I think clearing Mek's salary will end up helping us. With Felton I think what you're saying is a part of it, but really they're just doing what they should...getting the best deal for the Bobcats that they can.

I don't know that we'll be in great shape in 2011 but we won't be in bad shape like we would have been. All those teams (17 last I heard) clearing cap in 2010 will already be in a position in 2011 cap wise as instead of getting that top tier FA (which probably won't be available anyway) they'll just keep a lower salary going forward.

Well, their recent moves/non-moves seem to be more long-term oriented than what we'd seen from them before. If it keeps the team in a better and more flexible financial situation in the future, then it's probably the right move for this team. Economics are cyclic, so if the team can steadily build a fanbase while the economy isn't doing well, then once people have more jobs and money, the team might be in good shape to actually spend and win championships.

Or, they could just spend a lot of money now and end up going the way of the Sting.

I'm certainly no expert, and I'm still uncertain about how I feel about the TC-Oak trade, but I think the team is at least in alright shape as currently constructed.

Plus, the trade deadline is half a year away. Who the hell knows what else could happen between now and then?

Nah, he'd probably want to go to a championship contender!

At the risk of turning this into a long theological discussion...

Do you think we could get that elusive "hometown discount"?

One which poor Bing (and probably others) isn't able to help with.

Well, if our coach didn't cuss like the devil, and our owner hadn't made his money off wasting other people's time and money, probably. In other words, in a few years. :p

Am I going to hell for that?

Couldn't tell you.
I usually abstain from religion.

Back on topic, let me say that the team doesn't necessarily have to sit on its thumbs, but I would agree with others that think that the team doesn't have to go all out on some free agent this summer to be successful.
