NEW YORK, Aug. 6, 2009 – Rashard Lewis of the Orlando Magic has been suspended without pay for ten games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program by testing positive for an elevated testosterone level, it was announced today by the NBA. Lewis’ suspension will begin with the first game of the 2009-10 NBA regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play.
Rashard Lewis Statement:
“First and foremost I take full responsibility for the situation and accept the corresponding penalty.
Toward the end of the season I took an over-the-counter supplement which at the time I did not realize included a substance banned by the NBA.
I apologize to Magic fans, my teammates and this organization for not doing the research that should come with good judgment.
I hope this unintentional mistake will not reflect poorly on our team and its great character.
I hope every athlete can learn from my mistake that supplements, no matter how innocent they seem, should only be taken after consulting an expert in the field.”

I find it hard to believe that any over the counter product elevates testosterone levels. :g:

Yeah, same old excuse.
It's unfortunate that it's crossed over into basketball now. Though, it would be naive to think that steroids are just a 'baseball problem.'

They started in football with the 70's Steelers, they just don't matter as much there because it's not a stats game. They're all over wrestling, they've been all through the Olympics, and apparently even Nascar had issues with crewmen. Baseball just got the unlucky distinction of being the sport where it "mattered" even though it really doesn't.

I think it does matter.
Think of all the minor leaguers who are still in the minors because they didn't take steroids. The argument that they have the same opportunity to enhance as everyone else is ridiculous, because by their nature steroids are unhealthy (and make your balls small).
The same can be said about College kids trying to make it in the NBA. If all the guys in the league are doing it, then it becomes a requirement to make it in professional sports, and it should not be.

But that's not why people say it matters. They say it matters for the "integrity" of their sacred statistics, which can't be compared anyways. And that's what baseball does that no other sport can.
As for your argument, I totally agree, and I hate steroids as much as anyone else. Anyone who takes them should never play again, and all their stats should be blacklisted.

I (and most of members of french basketball websites) was surprised when I saw the lenght of this suspension. We can see the difference between NBA rules and, for example, cycling ones.
If a men is checked positive for doping in "Tour de France", he surely takes a two years suspension.

^ NBA yields more dinero, you can't afford to lose your golden-egg-layin'-chicks for too long.

Right.. but it's like the NBA don't care about that. We can think that more and more players will take the risk... if it's for an only 10 games suspension.

Oh, but they do care, every once in a while a scapegoat ignorant of his transgression crops up, which serves to paint the league as caring and governed by principles. This time, the role of the scapegoat is played by one of the players form the upper echelons, it's all one big show, a poorly directed show.

hyperbolic overstatement.
You would imagine someone taking drugs like that would be bigger and stronger, but he's still a scrawny little twig
