View Full Version : Monta Ellis Trade Idea

It looks like Allen Iverson is going to sign with Memphis. This still leaves the Bobcats with a question of a go to scorer. There are several options to land a go to scorer but a possible solution. I got the idea for this trade from a Dallas basketball website(http://www.dallasbasketball.com/fullColumn.php?id=2006 (http://www.dallasbasketball.com/fullColumn.php?id=2006)) that suggest a three way trade that involves Charlotte, Dallas and Golden State.

It is no secret that Golden State wants to either get rid of Monta Ellis or Stephen Jackson. I would assume that financially it would be beneficial to trade Monta Ellis. He has a contract that will pay him 11 mil over 5 years, and Golden state is loaded at SG (Stephen Curry, Anthony Morrow, and Kelenna Azubuike. Charlotte is looking for a scoring identity and could use a guy like Monta Ellis who can give you 20 points a game.

Dallas makes this trade possible because they are looking for a veteran player who plays perimeter defense and can score from the outside. They are also trying to get rid of Greg Buckner salary. This is where Raja Bell comes into play. He has played for Dallas in the past and could be a good fit for the current Mavericks. In the trade we would receive Nathan Jawai and Monta Ellis. Dallas will get Raja Bell, while Golden State gets Greg Buckner and Mohammed.

This trade works for all involved. Charlotte gets a go to scorer and a forward with scoring potential that can rebound and block shots. Dallas gets much needed perimeter defensive help, while Golden State gets an expire contract and some interior defensive help.

I did this trade on the trade machine and if we make this trade starting tomorrow it would: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ljxv5r

He shouldn't on this one. Monta's talented, but he's a SG trapped in a PG's body. And he's MUCH more SG than PG. In my mind, tweeners can work at the SG/SF position, but not so much at the PG/SG...those are two different mindsets. Most of all that, I wouldn't be jumping at that for $11 mil a year. We'd be paying 1/3rd of the cap on a starting backcourt that either has no one to initate the offense (Ellis/Bell) or a backcourt that is lucky to be called 6' tall each (Felton/Ellis).

Now, if we can get involved in a trade that nets us Buckner (that we can waive and get the $4 mil in cap space) and a solid backup 4, then that's the thing to go after right now, I belive.

I still haven't decided if I would do this from the Bobcats standpoint, but from the Warriors standpoint I would not do this. Nazr doesn't give them cap relief for another two seasons and Buckner only provides two million in relief. That just isn't enough to ship out Ellis. Also while Jawai isn't a big time center if he left dallas that would leave a glaring whole at the center position. They have a talented frontcourt with Dampier, Dirk, Gooden, and Tim Thomas; but out of those guys only Dampier can play center in the west. Shawne Williams is a big foward and Humphries is incredibley strong but short and doesn't have ups. I don't know if the other teams involved are too motivated to do this. Golden State hasn't gotten any offers for Monta yet so I don't think they are just going to give him away. But then again Don Nelson is known to make bad decisions in bad moods a la Steve Nash and paying Finley to go play for the Spurs.

I like Raja and all that, but if that's all it takes for us to land Monta, then I'm definitely all for it

That's why we'd better stop producing such trade ideas, or we'll be more disappointed than we should be.

Yeah, it won't happen. But if anyone can make a small backcourt work, it's LB.

Please, no more undersized combo guard, who can't shoot.
