For the record I think he gets 2 quick ones and then he is banished to the bench never to be heard from again. I bet under.

I'm trying to be optomistic, and went under. Also, if he goes ahead and gets 2 turnovers, I hope he gets pulled. How'd he earn that extension? Because of that one superbowl he went to years ago?

I think he "earned" that extension because his cap hold for this year was over 11 million bucks. They extended him in order to lower the cap hit this year. I think neither party expects him to actually finish out this contract.

Earned...?
:xplode:
Oh....oh.. hell no. Jake has played average football even the year they went to the Superbowl. He doesn't have a strong arm, his aim is like 86 on Madden every year and I'd have to give him a B on aim myself. Can't run, Can't move in the pocket. Doesn't pick good targets...And now The Panthers have him for five more years. I'll admit I don't know much about the wheelin and dealin with contracts. So I'll ask a simple question, Why wouldn't he finish out his contract? Unless he retires then pulls a Brett , the Panthers have him for 5 yrs. No one would trade for him, especially not with that contract. Educate me...
Edited: Madden is just an example, Don't take that seriously.
Under. But I wouldn't be surprised either way.
Bill Simmons has an excellent column on him on ESPN.com this week.
And kat, it's MATT Moore, not Mike.

Many times a team will sign a veteran who has an enormous cap hold to a lengthy extension even when they don't expect him to be around at the end of the contract. Then, because the contract is only partially guaranteed, they just cut the guy a couple of years later.
Jake's cap hold this year was lowered significantly by the extension(something they were forced to do because of Julius and others being so expensive and eating their cap room). The contract is only like 40% guaranteed money, so after a couple of years they can cut him without having to pay him a lot of money and also take the savings on their cap number for that year.

Your right....Mike Moore is a made up person from when I was in high school. Silly thing that went around my high school for a while like a fad of some kind. It was who ate my cookie... Mike Moore did it. Who ran over the dog? Mike Moore. My old age is catching up to soon. Kinda fits I wouldn't know his name, How many 3rd string QB's names really are known. If your that deep I don't want to care who he is, But since Jake sucks the Panthers are forced to dig in the barrel a liitle deeper.

Sorry, I'll try again.
Jake had another year on his contract with a salary cap number of over 11 million. In order to lower that cap hold, they extended his contract and spread the money over several years. This way, his cap hold for this year is significantly lower than 11 million. Furthermore, NFL contracts are almost always only partially guranteed.
So (I haven't looked at the actual numbers, so this is just an illustration), you owe Jake 11 million on his old deal, but don't want all of that to count on this year's cap. So you sign him to a new deal with 20 million guaranteed, but you spread it over 3 years. Now his cap hold is lowered to something like 6.7 million or less depending on how it is set up (probably an escalating deal where he is paid like 5/6.5/8.5 over the three years).
Keep in mind that the unguaranteed portion of the extended contract gets factored in to his cap hold too. Thus in the last year of his new deal, his cap hold will be huge again if you keep him on the team. In order to avoid that, you either extend him again, or cut him and only lose the remaining portion of the guaranteed money you had in the current contract.
