View Full Version : Preseason Game 2: New Orleans Hornets at Charlotte Bobcats (in G'Boro) 10/8

Thursday night we have our second preseason game against the universally despised ( at least here in the QC ) New Orleans Hornets. As always when you face the Hornets you have to deal with the games best point guard CP3.
I promise I won't bring up for the 10,000th time the fact that we could have turned #5 & #13 a few years back into CP3... I promise I won't
This game would be even more fun if we got to see Tyson Chandler and this dude go head to head, but unfortunately neither guy is going to suit up.

That image of Mek in a Hornets uniform is really disturbing isn't it?
So what do you guys think? Are we going to kick the collective asses of these George Shinn Hornets and send them home with a loss?

I'm just looking for further development of the youngsters. I have fantasies of Ajinca and Henderson becoming above-the-rim beasts and DJ shooting smooth J's. Gerald dipping a shoulder into a defender driving to the rim and throwing the poor dude into the cheerleaders. Lucky bastard.
The new buff Nazr will lead them to the spoils.
In another thread Charles Barkley kept coming up in a conversation about Stevie Graham. Now I can't wait to see this guy!
Ha. Anyway, I'm going to the game, but at the moment have no idea where I'm sitting :P Will Call will let me know!
I can't wait, if only because it's Bobcats basketball.
But beating the Hornets (whether it counts or not) is ALWAYS worth it.

i'm just excited that i can actually watch the game on tv this time!! plus, i think the young guys will have something positive to build off of after competing with cleveland in game 1. should be an exciting game regardless... go cats!
I hope the game is on TV, Fox Sports Network was showing an English Premier League sports show instead of the Cats-Cavs game.
I hope the rookies continue to improve, and a win would be great too if not just to boost a little bit of confidence.

Yeah, my guide doesn't have the game on either. I really don't want to break something tonight if it not on..haha. The website has it on FSCR, is that Fox Sports Net??
I was going to go get tickets last night but I have been sick as a dog these past few days so I won't be able to make it which really sucks because I live so close to Greensboro. Oh well atleast the game is on TV tonight, if you have DishNetwork it's on channel 445 here at my house. To those of you going to the game tonight have a blast and make sure that Emeka (if he's there) knows that Bobcats fans are extremely happy to have Tyson Chandler. I'm gonna say Bobcats win 95-92.

Hornets roster ,
http://www.nba.com/hornets/roster/
Im not even sure who starts . But even short handed i think we match up well . Im looking foward to seeing more of our young players UPS , Hendo , Lex,
Bobcats preseason win . Felton allways plays CP3 well . I think it goes back to ACC days
Matching up with Wright and West should be instresting?
A game UPS should start instead of Vald //??
Their healthy lineup is CP3/MoPete/Peja/West/Mek
Vs. ATL they had CP3/MoPete/Wright/West/Sean Marks, so I'd assume that's what's on tonight.

I like Brown and Graham as guys who can play multiple positions and eliminate the mismatches we used to have with those hybrid 3/4s that Atlanta and Philly have had.
Guard play was solid between starters and bench.

Got lost watching the dreaded and loathed Cards choke up a certain win to the Dodgers (WA-HOOOO!!!!!) and didn't remember 'til that was over that the Cats were......on tee-vee?!?!?! This is the first ever televisied preseason game for us, right? At least, excluding C-SET. Very very cool!!!
Anyway, yeah, Chrissy took over in the 3rd and got it close, but overall, it appeared to me in watching the last quarter and a half, we're the much better team....and once again, that's with us missing 2/3 of our starting froncourt. It's really surprising to me just how much better depth we have by adding Henderson, UPS, Flip and Steve.
Major kudos to DJ for having to carry the load with Raymond's injury....and doing so impeccably. Also, Steve is the man and really is reminiscent of George Lynch in all ways...this dude looks to be a keeper. Also, great job at the line from UPS.
Preseason wins and losses mean little to nothing to me, but it's good to finally get one after last year's 0-for.

Time to take Gerald out. I'm past my pre-season wince quota. He's been the best Bobcat on the court tonight, but we need him healthy.
No kidding. LB kept leaving him in there and I just knew it was going to cost us.
That was a good game! Right out of the gate we looked the better team. The starters all played under control and strong defense. Felton guarded Paul well, and instead of letting the pick work out the big would rush up on him and doubleteam him.
Felton played a very strong game. Took only one shot I thought was questionable, made nice pick/roll passes and even got a dunk off a nice tap by Gana.
And get this...Vlad played some very good D on West! At one point I think West somewhat lost his cool Vlad was sticking with him so well!
I think DJ looks a lot better this year than he ever did last season. He plays good D, he's talking on offense and he's moving a lot without the ball. He still looks primarily to score, and matching him with Flip in the 2nd unit ought to get us some points out of that group.
Flip seems to look for his own shot a lot. On one set he brought up the ball and DJ played off guard...ball never left Flip's hand til it went toward the basket. Can't see LB liking that for long.
Little disappointed in Henderson. Always looked to shoot even if it wasn't there. I actually think UPS looks a little more NBA ready than Hendo does.
This is going to be one fun season if we stay healthy.
Had to miss the game, but sounds like a good one. Anyone know the extent of Ray's injury? And why Anderson didn't play (other than it was close)?
From what I've read, DJ and Ray combined to beast CP3, the refs are going to make D-Wade, LeBron, and CP3 look a lot more human, Lexy is a lot better, Flip needs to find his stroke, Kat and co. are going to be all over Ray because DJ is a lot better, and LB tried to kill Crash. Did I miss anything?

He looked fine on the bench. He was grimacing a little bit right before he went out, but he was getting up welcoming the players when they'd come off the court for a timeout.
And it'd be a hard sell to say that DJ outplayed Felton as he was about as good as it gets. The dude was halfway to a triple double while shooting a great % in a little over 13 minutes.
DJ did play very well though.
And if y'all plan on keeping this DJ vs. Felton thing going in EVERY FRIGGING GAME THREAD I'm going to start bailing. I don't want to pick sides...I want to pull for and like both of them.

I know I'm raining on the parade a little. I'm sorry! but...
Except for small bursts of energy I thought it was a pretty sloppy game; not unexpected so early, especially with the new refs. For the most part both teams (but moreso the Hornets), were hacking everyone (in the head, on the arm, in the gut) that got into the paint. It was a little painful to watch after while. I really think the players were just messing with/testing the refs. It got so brutal that players on both teams were on edge during much of the game.
LB seemed pretty animated. Watched him get into numerous players during timeouts. Lexi's getting lots of attention from the coaches for sure.
Felton had a good game going and then left after getting banged up (go figure). Pace slowed some when DJ came in. He's a good PG, but a better shooter than defender/distributor. Agreed, he's vital at crunch time.
Radman started well but then just got lost. Really, the guys a step slow; his footwork just isn't there. One rebound. He's a big strong guy, but a plodder.
I don't understand all the love for Stephen Graham. Yes, he belongs in the NBA; barely. I think he probably had a career game tonight, and that's not saying all that much. He's undersized and not skilled at anything enough to be special. A tough grinder though.
Lexi looks stronger from the waist up, but the legs are still thin. He's definitely developing some inside moves; which is likely the most exciting thing going on with the Cats. How many of us look forward to seeing him play more than anyone else right now? But those legs! Man, he's one knee bump away from trouble. Don't get too hooked on Lexi.
Mohammed is slow. Sorry!
Derrick Brown has some skills and some athleticism; but I didn't notice anything otherwise special there. Needs XP.
Okay sorry for the negatives; but on the positive side....the regulars; Crash, Felton, DJ and even Diop played well in "sloppy conditions". Hey we didn't really have a PF. Bell was off, seemed out of sync; but not worried, he just needs some PT. Hendo was missing everything he shot, but you can see the skills. I don't think he'll be a star; but definitely solid in the near future.
I was really struck this game what is meant by "lacking a go-too scorer". It started to bother me. All this time, and the Bobcats just don't have anyone to just take over. This game was just waiting for that, and nobody showed. Who could?
Chris Paul sure could. If he'd stayed in the game, we'd have been toast; Felton or not...
It's early preseason, but we need TC and Boris back!

I doubt we would have been in trouble if Felton didn't get hurt Keetch. Not in this game.
Paul had 9 pts and New Orleans was down about 20 before Felton went out with the injury early in the 2nd half. He had moments, but we were dictating. When Felton went out, Paul instantly went into kill/attack mode and scored 15 taking our lead down to 3 as our offense stagnated outside of fts on loose balls and some drives.
People often get upset with Felton, but he understands when the offense continues to have empty possessions that he has to make something happen and then get the team back into the flow. In this game, we definitely needed to find a way to stop the bleeding when N.O.'s starters were out there, but we had difficulty doing that. That said, with Diaw in the game, the pick and pop is the go to play in tough situations.
I will say that without EITHER of our frontcourt starters playing I was impressed. I also really hope LB keeps running with this team. We are built to do it with fast pgs and athletic guys on the wing.

My buddy and I went to the game tonight, had courtside seats right behind the goal where the Bobcats bench was on. Amazing time. It was like being a at a basketball stripclub, because the Ladycats were RIGHT in front of us dancing for a good portion. haha. Anyways, Stephen Graham, Ajinca, and Brown looked solid tonight, especially Graham. The Lexi alley was sick. And Gerald owning Sean Marks made my night. I kept yelling at Marks how he sucks and belongs in the D Leauge. I got a headnod from Gerald when I shouted his name. He started lookin around, I pointed at him, and he smiled and nodded. Also, doesn't that Owens dude on the Hornets look like a woman? I came up with that conclusion and the Ladycats started cracking up over it. Dude looks like a lady!
Anyways, I'm going to put some pics up tommorow when my buddy brings his cam over. The worst part of the evening was the fact that there were so many pro Hornets people there. I thought it would just be CP3, but people were cheering Mo Pete for christs sake. Idiots.
A few more thoughts:
Those refs were bad. Real bad. Too many calls, too many missed calls. Rey wasn't hurt too bad, just banged up ribs. And LB isn't trying to kill Wallace. Wallace kept bitching at LB that he wanted to stay in longer.
GO CATS.

Great post ! We need to support both Ray and DJ. They are both assets.

It's like people have totally forgotten about the Boykins/McInnis "experiments". Quality depth at PG is a luxury...and we have it for less than 10 million bucks. Lots of teams would love to have that.
I thought it was kind of funny that LB quips about it being a 4 hour game when you could tell that he used the refs calling every foul as part of his strategy. There's a good reason Crash didn't take any outside shots and why DJ would throw it at the rim every time a guy made contact with him.
It would never have occurred to the Idiot to ever take advantage of that.

Agreeded and this year we showing debth at the two in Murry and Hendo . Three UPS who is fiting in fine thair. Four Lex has looked ready for rotation., Five Nazzs inproved play.
Nazz has added 15 to 20 pounds of mussle with out gaining weight.

Sorry. IDK if I wrote it the wrong way or you're taking it the wrong way. But here's what I INTENDED: The Felton haters are going to be all over Ray, for every little mistake, because DJ has improved greatly. Since DJ has improved, the pro-Felton people will have a harder time defending Ray. Remember, I'm on the side that thinks Ray shoud start. I was just saying the Ray haters have a lot more ammo now.
Also, note that I prefaced everything by saying I didn't watch the game.

I was at the game last night; spent the second quarter and the first part of the third in line for a hotdog for my son... They were NOT prepared for that last night. What struck me was it seems that DJ has really been hitting the weights; his arms looked a lot bigger. Ajinca looked a lot more aggressive, too, but it got him into trouble on occasion.
They need to play a couple games at the RBC Center in Raleigh; it could only help since we barely get to see any games out here on TV
Great game last night, it was nice to see Larry Brown get his first preseason win as Bobcats coach. The Hornets are a very good team so it's not like we beat some scrub team like the Clippers. Again it was impressive to watch us play that well without Tyson Chandler or Borris Diaw on the court but the big downside of this game was clearly the replacement ref's. I don't know how many fouls were called last night but it was way too many, they need to let these guys play without stopping the game every 15 seconds.

Apologies teej...I did know what you meant and my post was probably a holdover from the last game thread. I'd just came in from the game and saw that and it all kind of clicked.
I hope like hell both of them have a tremendous season and everyone can appreciate having 2 very good PGs on the team.
On a side note...anyone notice the blond kid who gave out the game ball to the refs? Did anyone see him on TV?
That was MY boy!

I saw you and your son sitting there Spectre. We were on the other side of the court, up from the baseline. I walked a lap around the concourse at halftime; but it was so crowded I couldn't spot you anywhere's.
I didn't catch the game ball thing; but that must have been WAY-cool. How'd you get such a cute kid? Your wife must be VERY pretty! :D j/k! I'm sure he's a perfect blend of wonderfulness....and a Bobcat fan to boot!

I am glad to see the improvement in DJ's game, but I saw that Ray looked stronger also and had a great game going before he got hurt. 13 minutes with 5 assists, 5 rebounds, 8 points, no turnovers, 2 steals and shot 67% from the field. I don't think there is a need to defend Felton. His game will speak for itself. Defending, distributing, rebounding and playing his heart out. Just needs to continue with the shot selection we saw Thursday and make good decisions and he will be fine. DJ needs to watch the turnovers and keep doing what he is doing. I am simply saying that we should not underestimate the improvement of Raymond but appreciate their differences.

Truth be told im kinda sick of the DJ v/s Felton thing. I like both players .
I don't care who starts ,ill leave that up two Larry Brown . Im just happy to get 48 solid mins out of our point position.
I hope we can soon start the UPS v/s Wallace and the Hendo v/s Murry v/s Bell
It would be nice to be that solid in five positions.

I couldn't agree more, there are a lot of teams that struggle when their starting PG comes out of the game but the Bobcats aren't one of them.
