View Full Version : Matchups
I know that Larry Brown, being the stubborn old bastard that he is, will never do this. But here are some situational matchups I thought of us using depending on who we were playing and who they were using. This isn't for the whole game, but as a 7 minute run to use as an advantage. What do you think?
Really big (vs. LAL)
C: TC 7-0
PF: Lexy 7-1
SF: Radman 6-10
SG: Crash 6-7
PG: Boris 6-8
Really small/quick (vs. NYK, etc.)
C: Lexy
PF: Boris
SF: Flip
SG: DJ
PG: Ray
Inside
C: TC
PF: Nazr
SF: Boris
SG: Crash
PG: Ray
Outside
C: Lexy
PF: Boris
SF: Radman
SG: Flip
PG: DJ
Ball handling
C: Lexy
PF: Boris
SF: Gerald
SG: Flip
PG: DJ

While those are pretty interesting and entertaining, I think the reason we have traditional roles is that they work.
I don't mind trying new things, but I'd much prefer that we focus on doing whatever strategy we decide to do extremely well rather than trying gadget line-ups every other night.
It reminds me of the Carolina Gamecocks: we've never been able to do a traditional ball control or high flying offense. So, instead, we would do random gadget plays that would work a small percentage of the time. Sure, we'd get a few wins we didn't deserve, but it cost us more over the course of the season.
Sidenote: the Gamecocks are finally starting to get it together with our youngsters on offense!

I'm not saying we should do this every other night, I'm thinking we should do this for a few minutes in a few games. The Lakers have a huge size advantage against most teams when they have Bynum, Gasol, Odom, Kobe and Fisher or Shannon on the floor. Why not counter that and be bigger? The Knicks use being faster and lighter than everyone as their advantage, why not counter that by being quicker but still tall enough to grab their misses? I don't at all think this would work if we used it often or even regularly, but there are a few teams where our roster could be used to our benefit, don't you think?

I don't see the line up of TC , Lexy, Wallace, Diaw, Felton . As a gadget line up. 3D played a lot of s/g for the Suns . I would see this as a quick , running, rebounding unit.
Though i would start Bell i wouldn't be sceard to go big with Lexy.
I could all so see Brown going small with Felton , DJ, Henderson, Brown, Lexy, Pressing the ball and traping , But that line up in short stints going after a turnover and or commiting a foul. No gemic just a purpose.
I can all so see Brown useing Radman and DJ in stints if the defence needs to be extended.
With that said i expect to see Brown to start the expected five. Making changes through out the game as needed. Ever player has a role on a L Brown team and im sure he has a idea of what role each player can fill. If he can't or don't fill that role Brown has no problem siting his ass on the beanch no matter what player.

In chess, you always want to have a strategy and try to make your opponent play to you. I believe that applies to basketball too.
Don't get me wrong, if a line-up goes in and it's productive, then do it until the other guy beats you. However, I don't like the idea of us preparing these line-ups, even if for just a few minutes during games, when we really need to be best at what we do most of the time.
To answer your example, think of what would happen if we had Ajinca against Gasol and Radmonovic against Odom. Whatever raw height advantage we might have would be decimated by talent.
Again, creativity is great. However, right now we need more consistency than creativity.

I understand what you are saying, and even agree with you to an extent. But I think if put into place correctly, at least some of these would work. Ajinca has manned up this season, and I think between him and TC, Bynum and Gasol would be negated. Radman has somewhat improved his D, he's at least serviceable on the perimeter where Odom works. Crash would be able to keep Kobe in check somewhat, and Boris at the point? THAT's a mismatch! Now I haven't even had the chance to try this out on a video game, let alone see it in real life. But for 5 minutes in some throwaway game, I think LB should try it and see how it works.
What about that NYK counter? I don't see how that doesn't work except maybe, maybe at the 3.
And dav, I think Boris going to SG may be a regular occurence very soon unless Raja gets it going, not a matchup nightmare for some team...

One thing that bothers me is that TC is left out of the "small" line up. With his ability to get up and down the court faster than most big men in the NBA he would be perfect in a run n' gun scenario.
I also think Felton should be in a ball handling line up over Flip. Their handles aren't even comparable.

Well like I said, this is all from my mouth and not LB's. But here's my reasoning. Good points.
I put in Lexy over TC in the small/quick lineup because Lexy is faster than TC and has more of a Kevin Garnett style of play, and since my main reason to use that lineup is the Knicks, Lexy's being taller than TC is also an advantage. Against a more traditional center, TC might be a better choice. There are so many combinations, I literally don't have the time.
As for Ray and Flip, I put in Flip because Flip is a shooting guard and Ray is a point, and I didn't want any "Ray isn't a shooting guard" crap. But yes, depending on who it was used against, Ray would probably be a good fit as well.
