View Full Version : Opening Night: Charlotte Bobcats at Boston Celtics 10/28

Wednesday night, the long off-season will finally be over.
:clapping:
We'll be opening up against the universally despised ( at least around here ) Boston Celtics. The Celtics will be coming off of a tough game against Lebron and the Cavs the night before, so its likely that they may come into the game without being completely focused on the Cats.
Things to look for this game are:
* The health and conditioning levels of Diaw and Chandler. Missing most of the preseason, are they going to be fit enough to get up and down the court like LB needs them to?
* Alexis Ajinca. His minutes dropped significantly over the last few preseason games, How much playing time is he going to get now that the games count.
* Gerald Henderson's FG% - He managed to shoot around 50% in the preseason by focusing on drives and his midrange game. Can he continue that?
* DJ Augustin -vs- Kevin Garnett... Kevin Garnett operates by finding the smallest guy on the court then choosing that guy to focus his nonstop yapping on. Note to Kevin: Just shut the f*** up and play ball.

Boston plays in Cleveland tonight, then must travel home to host us tomorrow. And they also dont have Big Baby. Considering we match up well with them and they will be coming in on the back end of a back to back having just played King James and Shaq, I think we have a good shot at winning.
I'm excited. Is the game going to be on FSN? Thats about the only channel I can get the Bobcats on down here in Wilmington.
We'll be opening up against the universally despised ( at least around here ) Boston Celtics.
Not universally.
But I'll be rooting for the 'Cats tomorrow, and a double OT win for the Celtics tonight.
Diaw should be fine, TC I'm worried about, and Perkins will test him.
Nazzy is a big factor against Sheed, since I think they'll use him at center.
Stevie Wonder has to matchup well with Ray Allen, and I don't think he will.
Ray should hold Rondo in check.
If we want to win, it's up to Crash and Boris.

I watched that game tonight Boston @ Cleveland and I think we are going to have our hands full tomorrow night, I pray that the Celtics are going to be very tired against us because they looked very good tonight...

New Bobcats: Brown's second Charlotte team is constructed more to his personal liking (http://www2.journalnow.com/content/2009/oct/28/browns-second-charlotte-team-is-constructed-more-t/sports/)
Nothing new really, mainly just a synopsis of how we got from last year's training camp to now. One quote that stands out:
"Coach (Dean) Smith came last year to the first couple practices, and he didn't think we'd win the ACC," Brown said. "I think he was probably right. I think this team is a little better than we were at the beginning of last year."This is the looooonnnngggeestt day ever! We might get smoked tonight (nah, we're going to kick their green asses), but I don't care. Just seeing the 'Cats taking the floor is good enough for me.

After looking at thease match ups
I think we might be able to play DJ and Felton a lot tonight
DJ at 6 ft and Rondo at 6.1 should match up well. Not much strenth difference
Felton at 6.1 and Allen at 6.5 should match well too. Felton having a edge in strenth and speed and Allen slight edge in size.
Wallace 6.7 220 Perice 6.7 235 Perice has a shooting advantage. Wallace has a speed adventage
All three match ups are hard to call?? THOUGHTS
Diaw 6.8 Wallace 6.10 One thinks at first Wallace has a advantage. But Boris is in side and out a tough cover for Wallace . Wallace gets mad quickly against us . I think due to Browns coaching
KG 6.11 has a big scoring edge . But a 7.1 TC could get into his head if he can stay out of foul truble.
I think the beanches decide this game in the end . Nazz, Henderson , Lexy, and Graham will be key.
Thoughts on how you think thease guys match up .

Problem being if we're playing DJ & Felton together most likely DJ will have to try and keep Rondo out of the paint....which last year was a big weakness of his. Also, that puts Felton on Allen...and HIS biggest defensive weakness was sticking with jump shooters (see Ben Gordon, last Bulls' game).
I think this is one of the games where we can't go small with the guards. Give Hendo the burn IMO.
spectre I agree...I think even if LB starts Stevie he's out in 5 with 2-3 fouls...Hendos gotta learn quickly how to guard these guys and the sooner the better IMO...

I forgot about Rondo getting into the paint at will. It would be much better if Felton could guard Rondo. Penatration and kicking it out is how Rondo killed us last year. Its way too much fire power to dubble on any one. Browns commets about bringing Henderson along slowly made me think of that match up.
If Brown plays a small back court DJ has to stop penatration.
Agreeded Spectre i would prefer to give Hendo the burn too.

Celtics home opener should compensate for their back-to-back.
We're gonna get smoked. The Celtics are one f'in good team. And damn I hate saying that.
...but FTC anyway. I just hope we give it a good show; but honestly I have no love or trust at all for the "games" of some of our critical players:
Radman
Diop
Nazr
Graham
I don't think LB trusts Ajinca, so he's likely a non-factor (surprise me Coach!). UPS will have all he can do to keep up, IF LB gives him any burn.
So other than DJ and Hendo (who definitely should be starting); that's our depth.
pffffttttt. That's why I'm having difficulty getting too excited about the team this year. I'm hoping for a big surprise though; and promise not to be a fair-weather fan. Has this team seen any fair-weather?

Boy, these game threads are a sight for sore eyes. Even though my outlook for the season is equivalent to Keetch's, I too am still looking forward to the season and hope for the best.
I think we've got as good a chance to beat the Cs as any time we'll have this year, but I'm still not expecting a win by any means. After all, starting Steve Graham doesn't instill much confidence I have to say....
But, hey, Larry's talking to our very own Steve Martin on the pregame, so, I'll be damned, the season really is here!

I couldn't get it to work. It made me try and re-log in (it said I was already logged in) and then it would do the "redirect in 5 seconds" and send me back to the log in again.

STH here, I thought the preseason games i went to were bad but this is terrible. Outside of GW we are just sucking as bad as anything I saw last year. I won't overreact to the 1st game but i think we are in for a tough season
Chandler had Chris Paul - He won't here and Nazzy has played better in everything I have watched year to date and that is sad - it's also great to pay Diop millions to sit and do nothing
Diaw must still be recovering and getting into shape as he is MIA
Wallace is playing like a man possessed - thank God we have a player with heart
DJ outside of 1 preseason game has been off to me so far - hoping he gets back into it soon
Felton is Felton with the goods and bads that come with it but he is giving the usual effort - tough as nails
I wish we would just play Henderson and see what he really is going to be able to do. Graghm is not going to do anything and murray is not available so just play henderson please
Anyway just one guys initial thoughts - i think we will be taking a step backwards this year not forward and that is not just base don this game but our off and preseason actions

defense dosnt seem to be our problem beside the 3s we gave up but face it ray allen is probly one of the best three point shooters of all time. What we need is a scorer. It took us more than 4 quarters to break 50 in my book that unacceptable. We need to play better, take care of the ball better and take better shots. I wasnt impressed with tyson at all tonight. We took a gamble on that trade ik but i think it is time to make one last move before we get to far deep into the season. We need a scorer. I just want a scorer. He does fit our team better, if only for the fact that LB likes him, and LB is God. Look, you're a stat geek. Mek put up stats. I understand you're going to like him for that. But He isn't what LB wants for the type of team we're running, so I'm fine with him being gone. Though the fact that we effectively traded Mek for exprinings, I don't like. What does Kobe have to do with anything?
How does he fit the team better? The argument was that he'd pick and roll better so it wouldn't matter that he had zero post moves. I tried to explain that the pick and roll will only be improved if Felton is more of a threat to score. Otherwise, teams just sag in on the pick and don't allow chandler to get his alleys. Also, Okafor was a bitch for not dunking enough and now Chandler seems to have the same problem.

Yea i signed up thinking i would be able to watch the away games, but apparently that isnt the damn case. Can watch every other damn team in the league but the one that is in my own state.
I'm in SC so that is probably the difference, although in the past, we were considered part of the blackout area (even though we have never been able to see Bobcats games).
Well...for me tonight it was Crash, Ray, UPS, and Hendo...I just hope the rest of the team shows up Friday...
LB, typo. Sorry. But you know what I meant.
And TC is out of shape. He isn't to be expected to do everything in game one. If it's game 15 and we're having the same issues, then we can talk. But this was his second time on the court since last season. Give him a break...

I actually had no idea what you were talking about, like most of the times I read your posts. TC is out of shape, but he played in more preseason games than Okafor, who was getting tons of flack for taking care of his body... because that was somehow a bad thing.

We're just tanking for Ed Davis
What is with all the Ed Davis hype?
Teej this game was embarrassing...and I do not put all the blame on the players...frankly I'm glad LB took the heat post-game because he deserved it...other than the four I mentioned earlier I feel like we had a bunch of guys trying to impersonate an NBA team...and even though this is my team and the team I will support I'm embarrassed by what I saw tonight...and damn any excuses...:paddle:

It was embarassing. But I'm not surprised is what I'm saying.
Well I was...I did not expect us to win...but I really did not expect us to be embarrassed...

I actually don't think Okafor's great night was due to the Chris Paul effect. The majority of his baskets came on post ups. Maybe, as a team, we didn't utilize him enough? Yeah, I agree with that.

I disagree. I think we saw what Okafor was capable. The contribution is limited. He's still a strong center than is very good at defending the post who actually has a couple of post moves. Chandler is a help defender capable of guarding more agile players but at the expense of giving up pounds to legit centers and his post game is minimal because he gets his points from elite athleticism. That's all fine and dandy when he's healthy, but that hasn't been lately. Hopefully in a month or so he, Bell and Diaw are all good to go and things are clicking, but at this point, what does that accomplish? A 7th or 8th seed that takes a quick exit? A team that just misses the playoffs (and loses their draft pick in what is being called a deeper draft)?

Come on guys we opened up against what looks to me to be the best team in the league tonight. We will bounce back, we have several players that aren't 100% yet, we had players with the first game of the season nerves, we will get better. Starting out the season against Boston was just a dagger to our sides sent to us by the people that make out the year to year schedules.... We will get better.....

dav...I'd like to point out from the "nerves" standpoint that the two rooks (Hendo and UPS) both looked fine to me...

We will be fine, unless LB and Graham have Fox/Delhomme relationship.

I knew somebody was going to say that before it was over, the vets had more to be nervous about where the rooks had nothing to compare it to, plus I think Hedo and UPS are probably better players coming into their first season than the others were....

This is a good point. Graham can be cut at any point, we're less likely to just outright waive Brown or Henderson.

Honestly, before this game I worried that we may be the worst team in the league. This game did nothing to give me any other assurance.
Now I'm thinking we may indeed get a very high draft pick this year; and give away the Lexy pick next year.
That's not just a reaction to a bad game. When I compare our personnel to other teams; I just don't see how we match up. We seriously lack NBA athleticism and talent. Except for Gerald Wallace, we have a roster full of role players and marginal back-ups.
Notice that Diop got no minutes? Not even scrub minutes (and there were plenty of those). FAIL.
I thought Lexy looked awkward as hell out there. He's not ready; and likely never will be.
DJ is small, not a great distributor and overmatched on defense. If he's not making shots; he's generally useless.
TC? sheesh. I've thought the trade was going to be okay. Now? Uhhhhh. I realize Chandler's out of shape, but my goodness was he clumsy. ACK. Now I'm thinking the Okafor-Chandler trade could cost us 10 wins.
Diaw just floats around, seems to have no purpose in his game, no role.
Crash is crash. He'll need to average 25 a game this year, but that won't happen. The Biscuit tried to get him to develop an outside shot; but LB stopped that. It's made GW one-dimensional and prone to forcing his drives. Stuff the middle and stop the Cats.
Anyways, maybe this year we'll finally get a great draft pick; though I'm still pissed at Walter Herrmann for costing us Kevin Durant :)

Another thing to add to this is we are 1-5 on opening day.... Also it was a road game of which we are 49-157 over all....

Erm. After an entertaining World Series Game 1 and an hour nap, I think I can comment more objectively on the game than before.
We suck balls.
No really, that was as bad as any Bobcats game I've ever seen. It may not have been the worst, but it was as bad as any of the worst that have come before. Obviously, it was an historic night of offensive ineptitude, but even the defense wasn't there most of the night. Apparently it doesn't matter the personnel; when you put on a Bobcats jersey, you are clueless on how to defend a goddam pick and roll, and how to communicate on switches!
The only happiness I got from watching the game was seeing Derrick get minutes and produce during those minutes on both ends of the court. Henderson looked fearful at times, passing up open shots, not driving to the basket, but Derrick was confident and smooth as hell out there, and only after one game is living up to the hype I and others here have built up around what a special player he will be down the line.
As far as I'm concerned everybody but Derrick (and at times Gerald) was worthless on the court. Effort (ie Raymond) is cool but that only goes so far when you can't hit a shot for shit or create for others without unforced TOs. Boris? There were glimpses, but overall, it wasn't happening. Graham? Please start Henderson from now on, Larry. And Chandler? Lexy was more of a factor, and looked no less confused than him. Yeesh...
I'm just happy Larry took the blame for the performance because, honestly, a lot of it is on him. No, he can't make the shots for the players, he can't keep the PGs from making ungodly unforced TOs out the yin yang, he can't outmatch the talent of the Celtics, but he can prepare a team to play a game, and this team wasn't prepared; like he admitted, they looked lost, and I expect a head coach of his caliber, who's had a training camp and 8 preseason games with this crew to do a better job of preparation than the group that was seen tonight. Conversely, having such a coach, while we may lose by 30 or more Friday, I'm sure it will be a prepared team that takes the court, and there will be an asschewing fest on the ride home and practice tomorrow.

If we had won this game by 20 I'm convinced we would have posts on this board stating we could finish in the top 5 in the east. It's like one game an everybody is going crazy. I was not thrilled with the game by no means but it's one game, it's over, next game please. We always seem to play well versus these guys just not tonight. It was just outright bad.

Why is Chandler out of shape?
EO50 didn't log minutes in a single preseason game, but he poured in 18 and 10 last night. :g:

Hmmm...think maybe it has something to do with him not being able to walk all summer made worse with him trying to play with injuries at the end of last season?
If you guys remember he was hobbling out on the court for the first week or two during preseason. I think it's a HUGE stretch to think he could sit for that long and then in 2 weeks suddenly be in prime form.
Mek might have been injured during training camp...but I assume he was healthy all summer and thus could work out. There's no comparison.

I know what you mean. But it is just about how very BAD we looked, not merely that we lost. We made only 23 shots. We had 23 fouls and 18 TO's. That is bad.
