Since he's far and away our best player he needs his own thread. I mean...the dude got 24 points, 20 boards the other night!
Anyway, I ran across this site where they calculate individual defensive efficiency ratings (for last season) and look where Crash came out:
Individual Defensive Efficiency Ratings Extracted from Play-by-Play Data (http://www.basketballgeek.com/2009/10/30/individual-defensive-efficiency-ratings-extracted-from-play-by-play-data/)
Below is a list of the players that have the top 15 defensive ratings from the 2008-2009 regular season (minimum 500 defensive possessions used):
1 BOS Kevin Garnett902.4(84.9, 94.2)
2 ORL Dwight Howard901.7(86.2, 92.9)
3 CLE LeBron James921.9(88.3, 95.6)
4 LAC Marcus Camby922.2(88.2, 96.7)
5 CHA Gerald Wallace932.0(89.1, 96.8 )
6 NOH Chris Paul951.8(91.5, 98.7)
7 POR Joel Przybilla952.2(90.5, 99.3)
8 BOS Rajon Rondo962.0(92.0, 99.8 )
9 CLE Anderson Varejao962.1(92.1, 100.3)
10 UTA Andrei Kirilenko962.4(91.7, 101.3)
Statheads...a legit formula?

If the team was making enough jumpers for him to have some room to operate he would be a lot more valueable. Right now his fg% is low because he is jumping in to three of the other teams bigs in the post. I know lb don't like a bunch of jumpers but it is the only way this team is going to win. He needs to give a lot of guys the green light.
There is no spreading out the other teams defense at the moment because no one seems to be able to hit a jump shot...Crash has to drive into traffic on just about all of his attempts...my concern (with this) is he is destined for another injury this year which would put the team in a world of hurt...I'd still like to see us go to a better motion offense (like Houston)...IMO it would open up less contested shots...any way...we need a change of offensive strategy because what we're doing is not working...Ray bashing will start soon because (he again) is being stuck with the ball and no time on the clock...and on too many occasions he is holding the ball too long from lack of movement...something about our offensive strategy has to change:paddle:
He is very underrated in my opinion. If he were on a contender, he would get a lot more recognition and would already have an All-Star selection or two. But I'm glad he's here, because I don't want to think about where we would be without him.

Looks good to me, but why is Dwight number 2 if his # is lower?

It's individual defensive rating, just with a couple of more points dumped on to specific players because of fouls. If nothing else, it provides a good example of what I think of when I say stats are going to continue to evolve. It was not a fun task to go through play by play notes and take a note of what fts were made when who fouled who, but it does paint a slightly clearer picture.
One thing I don't like about individual defensive rating which isn't an issue with team defensive rating is the whole possessions aspect. It's easy to see value in how many points a team allows per 100 possessions, but players don't play endless possessions. You get hurt, foul, experience fatigue... what's the real value in knowing how many points you allow per 100 defensive outings? I have many questions, I'll think on it a little bit.

Thing is we all know Crash is at best average defending perimeter shooters. I wish I had a dollar for every time he halfheartedly threw a hand toward the shooters direction while his body was already turning to go towards the hoop.
He's freaking stellar tho as a help defender. And chasing down a fast breat? Brutal (for the other side).

Yea, but he benefits from being on a defensive team and he gets steals and blocks while pulling down heavy boards. He also doesn't foul very often, so he doesn't allow many ft opportunities (2.2 fouls per 48 minutes last year!)

I missed this part in my last reply, but it is a major contributing factor to why Wallace rates so highly by this method despite being an average perimeter defender. We allow less points when he is on the floor, especially a season ago when replacements included the likes of Ammo. This is why Marcus Camby rates so well despite being terrified to leave the paint... his value as a help defender.

I love having Crash on our team because he's so enjoyable to watch play. He makes his name off of "effort plays," and that includes more than just ending up on the floor after trying to drive into three defenders. For example, in the Nets game, you could tell there was a point where he was sick of losing to those chumps and decided to just go get the ball. Sometimes just taking it right out of their hand (once on a guard and another on Lopez). That's leadership. That effort is contagious.
I think other teams and analyst recognize what a talent he is...I know I was watching the NBA channel Fantasy preview and they only had good things to say about Crash and what a complete player he is becoming...only knock I ever hear is "can he play 82 games"...he plays so hard every possesion I'm not sure he will ever get 82 but I'd settle for 78 myself...and I think he will be picked for the All Star team this year unless he gets a serious injury...
