Duke Nukem Forever. It's getting killed in reviews but it's been my favorite game of the year outside of Dead Space 2. It's plenty rough around the edges but I've had a lot of fun and laughs playing it. I can sum it up in two words: Wall. Boobs.
Just hide the kids because it definitely earns its M rating. You can probably find it online for $20-30 range.
I just got lost planet 2 for cheap and it was good.If you like really huge over the top boss battles you'll totally dig it.
The Witcher is a good one, the 2nd one even better. Oblivion could be pretty cheap, too.
Still on the Bethesda train, but was playing Red Dead Redemption for a bit. It was quite nice.
I'm tempted to join the Minecraft cult, but I'm waiting for now.
Quantum Conundrum is also on the radar: looks like it builds on the ideas of Portal very nicely.

If you like epic games Mass Effect is a good one for you. Gears of War is a MUST buy if you havent played it, I would start from 1 and work through 2 and 3 as the story is amazing
My son (and to a lesser extent his sister) is all into Minecraft, both on the XBox & on the PC. He has this extremely elaborate underground system of rooms/mines/gardens he's built which is pretty damn amazing. I could easily see me spending mindless hours messing with this game too.
