They are stepping up to the Big East in ball next year. Need the old fart for now. They have the guy from Illinois State who will be the "Coach in waiting" and he is pretty solid. So for now, good move for SMU. For Brown - oh how the mighty have fallen.
I don't know about this being about how far Larry Brown has fallen. It would seem that all the prime jobs with basketball schools of winning tradition are taken and this is right in Larry Browns wheelhouse. In the NBA Larry really could not get the kind of control he likes to have and in college at any level he is given more control. Especially in a school like SMU. Turning SMU into a traditional winner only would add to Larry's legend and should he fail at a school like SMU it would not hurt. So LB can not lose but for sure could win. If SMU loses LB and others will have believable excuses.Quote:

I don't get the bitter feelings where Larry Brown is concerned. He did what he was paid to do and he did it with less talent than many other coaches had to work with. We may have had our complaints with how he did things but the man is a proven winner. In only one job did he actually fail. Yes he does take most failing teams and makes them at least respectable. At 71 Larry did not want to be a part of a rebuilding effort. Veteran players require less coaching and thus they make Larry Browns job easier. Focusing predominantly on the young guys would have taken away from coach Browns job. Plus I am sure there is pressure for a coach to play young players when they are high draft picks but has it crossed anybodies mind that in practice these young guys were not earning their minutes. One thing I can say in regards to Larry Brown is that the players respected him most of the time even if they did not like him personally. With all the other coaches this team has had there seems to be a lack of respect. Sometimes that also came with a dislike. I will take coach Brown not being liked but respected if that means winning. That is what we had with coach Brown. I am guessing the bitter feelings are because he is no longer our teams coach. It would not have mattered with this rebuild. It may have kept us from being on the wrong side of making history but that is all. I hope we do not allow either Silas to coach our team. They are not the right fit.

Starting point guard Jeremiah Samarrippas told the school's student newspaper that Brown basically told him that he "wasn't good enough to play for him."
Samarrippas, a 5-foot-10 guard who would have been a junior next season, averaged 6.9 points and 4.2 assists a game last season. He started all 31 games last season and was a starter most of his freshman season.
The Dallas Morning News, citing a source, reported that three non-starting forwards were also being removed from the team. Leslee Smith, Ricmonds Vilde and Eric Norman all would have been sophomores next season.
