T-Wolves/Cats idea (modified)
Over on the Timberpups site, 10 trade ideas of moving Derrick Williams were thrown out. The authors favorite was with the bobcats:
Quote:
DWill and Amundson for Gerald Henderson and Bismack Biyombo
Why the Pups make this deal: This might be the best deal I came up
with from the Wolves side of things, which means I’m probably off my rocker
thinking that this could happen. The Wolves get a solid SG and a backup C that
would make for a nice defensive replacement for Pek.
Why the Bobcats make this deal: As discussed earlier in the week,
the Bobcats have a ton of talent in the backcourt but very little up front
(despite Byron Mullens performance in Minnesota). Biyombo is playing very
little for the team right now, so there is a chance they could be down on him a
bit. Would a pick from Minnesota be enough to sweeten this deal?

Notice that he is willing to throw in a pick to us to make it happen. However I still do not like that deal. The T-Wolves have three picks in the 2013 draft: Their own, Memphis 1st round (lottery protected) and OKC's 2nd round. Their own pick is the only one that has a chance to be decent and we know they will put protections on it similar to what Portland and Detroit did with the picks they gave us. In the end, not bad but no thanks since BB is starting to show signs of promise.
However, it gave me some ideas of a more involved trade. Minny has already made it clear that DW can be had but they would prefer to combine him with one of their backup pg's since both of them (Ridnour and Beara) are not expiring after this season. They also want expiring contracts back so they can play in free agency next summer. Rubio is due back in less than a month and he should have the bugs worked out by the trade deadline. Ridnour is the better of the two on the block (contract wise). 4 million this year and 4.3 next year. My idea:
PF Derrick Williams, PG Luke Ridnour, SG Brandon Roy, C Greg Stiemsma (16.5 million), Memphis 1st round pick
for
G Gerald Henderson, C Diop, PF Mullens, SG Reggie Williams (15.4 million) & Portland's 1st round pick
Why Minny does it. Minny needs shooting guards bad, they want expirings, they have bigs to spare, & the 1st round pick swap favors them since Memphis is looking like a beast but Portland could get them a pick in the teens this year or next.
Why Bobcats do it. Henderson and Mullens will be tough to keep cheaply and neither is worth a 7-8 million dollar per year contract that the market will say they are due. With Walker and Sessions on the court at the same time throughout the game, having another floor leader on the bench (Ridnour) may be necessary as the season goes on in case of an injury. All of the 5 million due Roy next season appears to be unguaranteed. Stiemsma has part of his 2.7 million guaranteed next year but he is a seven footer providing 13 minutes/4 pts per game...a helluva lot better than Diop. Williams is the prize and he is (IMHO) a good one. Just before Love came back he scored 15 & 23 pts. He is in the wrong place at Minny but the potential is there. I know Cho thought Mullens would be an important piece to the future but his shot selection continues to bother me and I wonder if he will ever put the emphisis of his game on posting up rather than chucking it from afar.
This puts a little handcuff on the Bobcats cap space next year but they would be unable to do much anyway until Henderson and Mullens were taken care of one way or another. Plus the Cats would already have most of their main players back next season:
Haywood, BB, Stiemsma
D. Williams, Tyrus
MKG
Jeff Taylor, Ben Gordon
Kemba, Sessions, Ridnour
