Free Agency 2013

Give Tyreke a hypothetical chance!

As I've mentioned previously, I'm in favor of sitting out the 2013 free agency period and doubling down on 2014. For 2013, wait until some decent players go without offers (and some always do once teams run out of money). Once they've been humbled, sign 'em up to 1-year deals. Don't hand out any long-term deals until 2014 though. In 2014, you focus on young, hungry, huge upside players that are ready to enter their prime and willing to commit long-term to what we're doing. In 2013, if you want to take a flyer on some young guy that came into the league with hype, but has yet to prove squat, and he's willing to sign for one year? Fine, go for it. Some past his prime dude that still has a "name" and might sell tickets for a couple weeks before the casual fans catch on? I suppose... if you must.

In 2010 Evans was coming off a monster rookie of the year campaign and was drawing Dwyane Wade comparisons that didn't seem all that far-fetched. However, he's steadily regressed ever since, and is now posting just 15-5-3 for one of the worst teams in the league. If was even just as good as he was in his rookie year we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying a guy needs to have his name called in introductions to play over thirty minutes a night. In fact, I've spent time in other threads arguing the exact opposite. I like where your head's at, I just think that you wind up with less than the sum of the parts if your perimeter players are Kemba, Tyreke, and MKG, which brings us to....

I'm not ignoring your points, I'm just saying that teams are going to pack the paint if you have one guy who's just OK from outside and two guys who aren't good shooters on the perimeter. If they drafted one of the centers this coming summer, he worked out, and they flipped Biyombo and pieces for a second stretch-four? Sure, they'd be much better than what's on the floor right now, but I don't think it's ideal, especially because everything hinges on Evans reversing course and negating three straight seasons of getting worse instead of better.

Evans hasn't gotten a fair shake. He has been moved from SG to PG then to SF then to the bench. The guy is a SG, period. I would take him in a heartbeat over Henderson. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the Kings would be interested in a trade package that centered around Henderson. The good thing about Evans' so called "regression" is that it may make his price tag drop a little. But let's be realistic, the kid will have multiple suitors both in the trade market and in free agency.
