I played football, baseball, soccer, basketball, and ran cross country on various levels as I grew up. We learned at a very young age to do what the coach says. "Eyes up, ears open". I've disagreed with coaches on numerous occasions, but I was only stupid enough to back talk a coach once.
It was one of my friend's dads. We had one of those "complicated" relationships outside the team because I spent enough time around him to be on good terms. I was goofing off outside the huddle trying to stand on a soccer ball for as long as I could and he said something to the effect of "stop that mess and pay attention" (similar to Dunlap and Ben). I said, "hold on I almost got it". I spent the next 5 minutes getting chewed out for disrespect, the ~30 minutes after that running laps and had to stand there while he had a talk with my mom, and I already told you what happens when you get home.
You can have your cute little complicated relationship with the players all you want. This isn't a Disney movie. When you step on that court/field, that stuff goes out the window because it's time to get down to business. It doesn't matter if you hate the coach or don't give one hoot what he has to say. You shut up and do what you're told. The way I grew up says Ben is way wrong and is lucky to have not been Paul Silased.
We'll just have to disagree.
