Looking FORWARD to next year

Please excuse the lame subject liner. It's one of those deals where I thought it was going to be funny, then realized it was incredibly lame, then realized that it's so lame that I needed to keep it up there. So for better or much...much worse here are my thoughts on last night's NBA Draft extravaganza.

Before the draft even got started, every single one of us had Amare on our minds. Like little kids at a candy store, we all geeked out at the possibilities of having such a lineup for the Bobcats next year. Unfortunately for all of us, the pre-draft rumor of Amare coming our way was our kryptonite. At that point, the only legitimate way for us to not be let down if we didn't get Amare was to get Oden or Durant. Like most ideas that sound too good to be true, the Amare trade never came to fruition (As of yet anyways). That left us with the excuse to absolutely hate anything that came our way, and boy did they come our way quick.

By the fourth pick, a few things became abundantly clear.

1) Greg Oden has sold his soul to the Devil, for a 7 foot body and athletic drive of a mad man in return.

2) No matter how hard he tries, Big Trouble in Little China cannot stand the taste of Sprite, nor carry on an actual live conversation in English.

3) Stephen A. Smith really IS yelling at us

4) Jay Bilas needs better phrases to use in place of: “Like all get out”

5) The chances of Mustachio actually vomiting were rising significantly as Noah slowly drifted our way.

After a little wheeling and dealing was done by the Celtics and Seattle, the number 8 pick started to take mold. Then, after all the theories, ideas, rumors, rants, raves, and disses by certain sports writers who shall remain nameless...David Stern walked up to the podium...

"With the eighth pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select Brandan Wright, from the University of North Carolina"

What happened next in the BobcatsPlanet chat can't really be summed up by words. Some people were excited (Most notably, me, as I am a homer for any Tar Heel), some people cried. I'm pretty sure Mustachio puked. There was cussing. Not just regular cussing, but spam cussing. Remember those guys that made the macros for AOL 2.0? You'd go into a chat room and see:

<<<<_______EDROW_______>>>>? Well, picture that. Except with pure hatred. It was completely instalegend. If there was such a thing for draft chat, that script after drafting Wright would go straight to the Draft Chat Hall of Fame. It was as if the Jets had just drafted Ryan Leaf or something. In a span of a couple of hours, we all went from "Oh my God we got Amare!", to "I hate my life". It was great entertainment.

Then, at the 22nd pick, pandemonium ensued. There was a point in time when I honestly couldn't stop laughing. The Bad News Bobcats had officially arrived. I went to bed content with the fact that we drafted Wright, Dudley, and US soccer was all squared with the mighty Argentinians.

When I woke this morning, I saw that Wright was traded for Jason Richardson and, for the record, I don't mind that. What's that you say, a Tarheel fan who doesn't mind Wright being traded? Yup. Here's why:

In all honesty, I believe that Wright is going to be a force in the NBA...eventually. Although it would have been cool to watch Wright develop as a Bobcat, I understand that Richardson would have way more of an immediate impact for our team. If the Bobcats were in, say the Western Conference, we would have a lot less of a chance to make the playoffs next year. So to keep Wright to develop would make more sense because we wouldn't probably make the playoffs anyways. Fortunately for us, we are in the East. Therefore, we have a solid spot of making the show next year. Jordan and company realized that by picking up an immediate need, our chances of making the playoffs in the East have greatly increased. It was a merited move, and a legitimate one to make in an effort to get to the post-season next year. Are we going to be kicking ourselves next year or in 2009 for letting Wright go? Maybe. Just remember, we haven't even played the first pre-season game yet, so nobody truly knows what next season will hold. At least our management put us in position to have a shot.

I was much happier seeing a deal worked out when I read ESPN this a.m..

I think there is something to look forward to. We're gonna be a 7 or 8 seed in the playoffs this season!

You mean the NBA Finals Cavs? I'd put us behind them and probably NJ.

And yes, the Finals cavs that had no picks, an always injured Hughes, probable to lose Varajao, an older Z, possibly losing pavlovic AND no money to sign players. They have a lot of work to do.

As for New Jersey, they have to face a Toronto team that is a year more seasoned, along with an older Kidd and Carter; along with a risk/reward sean williams. They have a lot of drama in NJ.

It seems like everybody is finally on the same boat starting with the coach, the players, the media and of course the fans. 2007-2008 season = Playoffs, if it doesn't happen then next season will be a failure as far as I'm concerned.

I think we're gonna definitely finish top 8 and I think we have potential to finish anywhere from 1st place to 8th place so it will be interesting to see where we end up.
