So watching this team, I’ve been frustrated and disgusted by their play as much as anyone. I’m glad I record most of the games so I can fast forward it when we’re playing like crap. I figure I’ve saved hours of my life doing that lately.
Anyway, in order to keep everyone from going in despair, there is something I want to point out. If there is one constant in sports, it’s the ebb and flow of teams throughout the season. All teams throughout the course of a season go through hot and cold spells, but the contenders have learned how to be more consistent and overcome sloppy play. Teams on the playoff fringes, however, seem to have these tantalizing periods of great ball, followed by puzzling losing streaks. While the ‘Cats started off slow, we started clicking in January, riding an incredible hot streak all month. We saw it starting to crack before all star break, and now we are in a full swoon. But if you look at teams 5 through 9, they are following this same script, they’re just at different chapters in the story (as has been the case every year in every league).
Toronto: They were terrible and out of it at the beginning of the year. They suddenly hit a 20-7 streak, all the way up to 5th place. Don’t look now, but they’ve lost 4 in row. They might have peaked too early and are hitting a down streak now.
Milwaukee: Started out HOT – then hit a deep 10-22 slump. Suddenly it seems like they can’t lose anymore, and are about to take 5th place themselves. Can they keep it up? Maybe – they’ve got good pieces, but they rely on a rookie at the point. I think that they’ll eventually succumb to pressure and tumble a bit in the near future.
Chicago: If you remember, Del Negro was on the verge of being fired with how awful the Bulls were playing. All of a sudden, they go 21-10 to save his job and their season. But, to prove my point, they’ve lost 3 in a row, with 7 straight upcoming games against playoff teams. They were right near the 5th seed, but it seems they are about to hit a dry spell and fall back in the race. We’ll see how much their previous playoff experience pays off.
Miami: The Heat are the definition of streaky, and honestly, it might be more frustrating being a fan of them than any other team. For every 3 game winning streak they go on, they match it with a 3 game losing streak. They recently lost 5 in a row, won 5 in a row, lost 4 in a row, and now won their last two. I consider them a wildcard in this race, though, because they have a bona fide, MVP-contending superstar that changes the equation. At any moment, Wade can go off on a hot streak and dominate. But at this point, I see them staying on the same up and down trend finishing at .500.
That leaves it with our boys in blue. Yes, they have been playing like complete butt lately. But I wonder if their timing is playing out perfectly, as we get this turd out of our system now, and start hitting a hot streak and riding that momentum all the way to the playoffs. I honestly think the other teams have peaked or are peaking too early, while we’re on the verge of busting out and closing the season on a tear. Lets go Couga… I mean Thunder(bob)cats!!!
So true. Plus, the Bucks don't have Redd, the Bulls just lost Noah, and the Heat don't have anyone to begin with outside Flash
We just need to pick it back up. Great post.
