Thank you, Chef. And please expound on the injury. From what I know a meniscus tear is not even close to being as serious as ligament damage. In fact, Ty may not need all 8 weeks. The surgery is more of a poke than a cut. This is not a panic situation. It does, however, mean that he'll miss both west coast trips and maybe our Texas trip. That is where we would need his energy.

i rehabbed on my own. dr's gave me a window of running by 6 weeks, i ran my first mile at 4 weeks. it was sore for awhile. i would say he could be back as early as 4-6 weeks if we really really needed him for a playoff push. i would say if we are fading or out of it keep him out for 8-10 and make sure he is 100% before bringing him back. as long as they don't have to remove the whole meniscus, it really isn't much to worry about. they don't "repair" or sew the meiscus because of it being cartildge and in the middle of your knee, there isn't a good blood supply and it doesn't heal well. so what the do is remove the damaged portion. the more they have to remove the more your femur and tibia will be bone on bone (think brandon roy). if it is mild (which it sounds like it is) nothing big, if it is removed it could hurt his athleticism down the road.

Thanks for clearing that up Chef. I understand the meniscus injuries are much less "noticeable" upon happening than a ligament injury, but I didn't know he already knew something was wrong. The way it was written up, it sounded like he was fine and had no problems whatsoever with the knee, then took a nap, woke up and he was injured.

I know some people can tear their meniscus and not even know something is wrong for days to weeks because it isn't a disabling injury like ligaments would be and symptoms aren't always as obvious. Only thing that bothers me is IIRC, meniscus injuries can have long term effects and can lead to more serious problems down the road.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to regarding long term, that they cut away what tore off... That's what led Amar'e to get microfracture surgery. He took about a year and a half to get back right, and didn't lose much athletically, but you see so many guys like Roy, Darius Miles, Anfernee Hardaway, etc. that just go downhill after having these type of injuries.

most of those guys had previous problems, so the accumulation led to microfracture. i have never heard of any complaints of problems in the past so if this is a perpherial tear and they don't have to remove much, it should be no big deal. trainers/teams are much better at assessing when to send someone back to avoid microfracture down the road.

I had a meniscus tear about 8 years ago also.

They ultimately had to remove about 70% of my medial meniscus. They originally told me 6-8 weeks recovery as well. I went to professional PT for about 3 weeks after surgery and was running in 4 weeks. I was back on the court playing at about 80% in 5 weeks and basically 100% in 6 weeks.

The only difference from what I know and what Chef wrote is that they do have options of repairing meniscus but it is far more rare. It depends on the type of tear and is not possible in all instances. Repair is better for you long term because of the bone on bone thing but can take up to 6 months to fully heal. Removal of the torn part is far more common though and sounds like what they are expecting for Tyrus.

The doctor told me that I would develop arthritis in that knee due to the bone on bone but it is 8 years later and it still feels great. I was 32 at the time of my injury (and not a pro athlete) so I expect Tyrus to be just fine. I've heard reports of athletes returning from meniscus tears in as little as 2-3 weeks. Since it is mid January now, I expect Tyrus to be back on the court playing in games by early to mid March. That gives us plenty of time for our stretch run.

This is bad news for sure but it is not the end of the world and most probably won't be a long term issue for Tyrus. Maybe this will give an opportunity for some other players to get more minutes and develop (primarily Hendo) and we can look back on this as a positive that made us deeper and overall better by the end of the season.

Dom will be the guy to get first shot to step up. Let's pray he doesn't get jumper happy.

I think somebody should print this out and show it to him. 58% of your shots should not be jumpers when you shoot them at a 20% clip.

I wonder if this could have been prevented by giving him a week or two off when his knee soreness started (~2 weeks ago?). perhaps by then it was already too late? medical staff should have been on top of this more imo.
