    Default Marc Gasol: Priority #1?

Should Marc Gasol be our #1 priority this off-season? MJ promises to not be inactive again and I think we should have enough money cleared to sign Gasol (and possibly even more if we can find takers on Diaw, Diop, Carroll, etc.). In my mind, this is the most economic and logical solution for our lack of an offensive threat on the block. Sure, we could wait for Dwight Howard, but I don't think he'll even consider us - ANNNND there are already trade rumors that Howard could be moved this off-season so the Magic won't lose him for nothing.

So, in my mind, if we draft well (I'm thinking of a combination like Kemba and/or a quality #3 to bring in to eventually replace Jack and/or another big), get Gasol in here, we are possibly the 4 or 5 seed in the East next year and still have Diaw and others salaries coming off the books to sign another big star next off-season.

What do you guys think? (And no this isn't just b/c of the love fest MG is currently getting during the playoffs, I've been a big fan of his game for awhile and didn't know he was a FA this off-season until the last week or so).

I think Marc has always been on a short wish list for fans of most teams. Capable big men are incredibly difficult to come by.

That said, I think we make a token offer (just like 29 other teams in the league) but I doubt he comes to Charlotte, even if we offer him a ton.

All depends on the Draft. If we get one of the top Centers in the Draft, I would invest in Kwame and try to keep him rather than go for Gasol. But if we dont grab a Center, it may be wise to make a play for Gasol and let Kwame walk.

Why not? Make an offer, whats the worst that can happen. I doubt he comes here, especially if Memphis pulls off the upset against San Antonio.

first of all priority #1 is Dwight Howard as far as centers go, we shouldn't sign an expensive FA Center to a multi year contract until after the '13 off-season. Marc Gasol = locked into mediocrity, prudence is the key.

You make him an offer regardless. At worse, you use him as a trade piece to get Howard

First plan is to find out if there's any possible way to trade for Dwight.

Second is to draft Kanter or Jonas if available.

Third is to go after Marc.

not to change the subject but this doesn't warrant its own thread and has been brought up already here. what are our odds of actually landing howard? let's assume cp3 is already on board because there is no chance at howard without cp3. if it is above 10% i think we do whatever gives us the best trade package for him, if that means gasol than do it, if not than don't even bother with an offer.

It's damn near impossible to say. It depends on cap space, supporting cast, any of the available PG's he may like, trade assets we have, etc. I will say that if we have CP3, Deron, or whatever other PG he'd like to play with, then we'd have a good shot at him. At least as good as anybody else.

However, I don't see what's wrong with signing Marc (assuming he wants to be here) then trading him to Orlando for Dwight when that point comes because if Dwight doesn't want to be here regardless, I'd rather have Marc than nothing at all.

it matters because gasol isn't worth more than $10 mil per year. he isn't offensively skilled enough to earn more than that and if he gets a big 5 year deal (lets say 5 years $70-75 mil he is getting into the bad contract range. if i am the magic brooke lopez or pau gasol or andrew bynum all look more attractive than an overpaid gasol.
