Alec Burks vs. Marshon Brooks

This is the first installment of a few comparison threads that I will start as we lead up to the draft. If there are any other similar player comparisons you'd like me to do, PM or reply in this thread.



First, let me preface this by saying this thread is not for us to say which player we'd rather have between the two, but to compare them, their games, and their potential in an unbiased setting. Unrelated posts will be deleted

Also, I should also say that I've seen more of Burks' game film (6 or 7 games) than Brooks' (3 or so games)

Burks' Pros

• Has the versatility to play PG, SG, and SF well
• Is very smooth on the floor and plays within himself at all times which allows him to stay in command of the game without making many mistakes
• Fantastic ball handler for a wing which, combined with a solid first step, allows him to score in a variety of ways off the dribble
• Despite being the main offensive weapon for his team, he shows a willingness to pass the ball and get his teammates involved in the offense
• Shows a determination to and work ethic to improve deficiencies, most notably showing improvement in his jumper

Burks' Cons

• Doesn't always give 100% effort on the defensive end of the floor
• Not a good spot up shooter due to his tendency to not have a consistent jumping motion, though has shown the effort to correct it (read above)
• Has trouble finishing at the rim
• Needs to add strength/size to frame

Brooks' Pros

• Has prototypical size/length for the modern day SG
• Nice handle combined with a quick first step allows him to get into the lane or score off the dribble with ease
• Solid shooter with range out near the NBA 3pt line
• Is a high energy player who displays good defensive and rebounding potential
• Possesses an "I'm going to score on you" mentality where you can depend on him to be willing to take the big shot

Brooks' Cons

• Bad shot selection leads him settle for too many contested outside shots
• Displays tunnel-vision where he dominates the ball too much, leaving teammates standing around watching him
• Needs to learn how to adjust to a team oriented game where he can pick his spots instead of playing with a me first attitude
• Needs to add size/strength to frame

Breakdown

• While their numbers are similar, it should be noted that Burks is a 19 year old Sophomore and Brooks is a 22 year old Senior, so it's fair to expect Burks to have a higher upside
• Brooks seems to have more of a killer instict than Burks, so you shouldn't expect him to shy away from pressure in big moments throughout the game
• Burks is more versatile and can be projected to adjust quicker to a team oriented game
• Brooks shows more consistency with the release/balance/footwork in his jump shot
• Burks makes better decisions with the ball in his hands whether it be passing out of a double team or attacking the defense
• Brooks shows more willingness on the defensive end of the floor (better work ethic)

Nice Analysis:

Seems like Brooks is the 'safer' pick and Burks has more 'upside' (if he has the work ethic to go after it, which I'm sure Higgins can figure out from a heart to heart with his son). Cho would pick Burks. I would take either over a PF (unless we do something to move Diaw or Thomas).

I'm not sure. One day I see a lot Brooks highlights on youtube and read about how good of a scorer he is, then on the next day I think Burks appears to be a much better fit for this team because he's able to play SF

Is the comparison "poor man's Brandon Roy" to Burks legit?

I agree with Swedd's thoughts that we need someone who will demand attention, but if we're going to cash in on Boris' expiring we're also going to be needing guys who can pass.

A lot of people say Larry Hughes but I don't really see it personally. Larry was a better on ball defender from day 1 and he had a more selfish attitude with the ball in his hands than Burks and takes far too many outside shots (Jack?)


Both Roy and Burks match up similarly with Burks (Roy a bit more height and Burks a bit more length) and both "play" PG despite being labelled as an off the ball guy. Both players also score a lot of points by getting guys going side to side so they can use a pull up jumper, Roy even shot worse from 3 in his sophomore year and didn't really develop his range until his senior year (hopefully as Burks fills out he'll come into that as well). DX describes Roy as smooth, skilled, and fundamentally sound who rarely makes the wrong decision with the ball in his hands--that fit Burks to a T.


I don't think Burks will be on the same level as Roy when he was healthy, but then again, there aren't any injury concerns with him either.

If thats the case would Burks not be the much better passer. At 19, 2.9 assist shows passing ability. Didn't he all so play some point in college. Both players are very close in ever stat . Brooks is a J Crawford not a bad comparison. Burks reminds me of a poor mans MJ with less tools , A very cooky confident player something needed to be real good in the NBA.

Im back and forth kinda leaning toward Brooks all so , but would be happy with Burks

I have watched alot of tape lately of both of them and Brooks seems to be the guy we need.

OT but: I also have watched some Bitchsmack tape and he actually looked good.
