BRI Reduction: What Could It Mean?

Over the course of the last few months NBA fans and media have had more than their fill of the words “basketball-related income” (BRI), “salary cap,” “collective bargaining,” and all the other words that go along with our least favorite word: “lockout.” Over the course of this very public back and forth all sorts of proposals, some real and some theoretical, based in truth and in simple logic, have been discussed. While nothing has been agreed upon yet (and may not be for some while), most simply wonder what any of this will mean to their team.

It appears they're going to be around 50-50, so per Fleming's calculations the new cap would be $50,915,789 and the LT would be $61,672,817.

I've read elsewhere that since there aren't salary rollbacks in the discussion this new split wouldn't kick in for 3 years or so. That would make sense as how do you reduce BRI unless you either cut salaries or eliminate jobs? I haven't seen that put forth by any of the bigger media guys tho.

If it did kick in immediately a lot of teams including us will be over the tax limit.

You remember what I was saying about his break even point? I somehow got onto the ~$50mil number as the point where he'll be able to see a profit. I think this lower cap is a great, albeit sideways, mechanism to both help increase revenue sharing and promote a level playing field. For example, in three years the Heat will have almost $57mil committed to just LeBron, Wade, and Bosh! The Lakers will have nearly $50mil to just Kobe and Pau!


I don't think it's going to help players though.

And while salaries and benefits would stay flat at approximately $2.17 billion for the first two years of the deal, that provision would allow the league to keep the salary cap ($58 million) and luxury-tax level ($70 million) unchanged until adjustments for the new system would take hold in the third year.

It would be the 3rd year before a new deal would take effect.

I've heard the cap for this year (if it happens) would be about $58 mil again.
