Really hate to hear that, but his knees are shot. Time for him to move on to the next phase in life.
Via Chris Broussard tweet, says it's due to degenerative knees. I read somewhere that his salary will then come off of their books, but it may be a year from his official retirement... Sad deal, although I'm slightly peeved that the Blazers get out of that contract.

class act. he could have milked this for at least one maybe two more years and taken in an extra 20 or 30 million, but instead told the blazers i can't do it. no need to pay me for something i can't do anymore.
Yeah, that does suck... And there were a couple games in the playoffs last year where he actually looked like his old self despite the injuries.
I still say he shouldn't have came back early for the playoffs a couple years back when he suffered the original cartilage injury. One your cartilage is gone and if the microfracture doesn't work, this is what happens. Oden is lucky.
Keep in mind, we own their 2013 first round pick. It's starting to look better and better
I ws checking on that after I heard the news he will likely retire. The pick is Top 12 protected for 2013-2015, unprotected in 2016. Portland will be good enough that I dont see them being a Top 12 pick, but it could be just outside the Lottery. If we get lucky, it could be at the end of the Lottery at #13 or #14. That would be nice.
If I remember right his contract was uninsurable. Does that mean he's actually giving up all that money?
Wow.
I would think this would actually help their chances to get better. Instead of having to carry a worthless Roy for 15+ million they'll have some space now to bring in a more productive player.
Instead of the mini MLE they'll instead get the full MLE at the least.

I looked at it as more of an out with the old mindset for them. Roy, Camby, even Oden (lol) and Crash, etc. all old guys that had big roles. They'll be out, so they could try and start a rebuild effort in 2013
Ah, gotcha.
It might depend on whether those rumors during the CBA negotiations were true or not and Allen wants out. Like the Bucks' owner (Kohl) he's rich as crap...but unlike the Bucks' owner he's had mostly competent guys running his team to where he can at least get to around 2nd round territory.
If I were them I'd keep trying to add talent around LMA.
...and Crash ain't old! - said from the still butt hurt group.

Roy gets all the money.
Part of it from the Blazers, part of it from normal insurance and part of it from secondary insurance specifically purchased because normal insurance identified his knees as uninsurable. The snafu for the Blazers is, that secondary insurance was not valid if he was traded (which effectively made him un-tradable)
