Default What happens if we don't get top 2 pick?

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on what it will be like if we don't hit the #1 or #2 pick this lottery. I'm pretty paranoid about that considering how often the bottom team wins the #1 pick. Seems like the 25% chance gets you the 3rd or 4th pick most often.

And by the way, I don't know why I haven't been coming here. This forum seems WAY more active than the land of crickets over at RealGM. I think they've merged all 12 threads into one over there so it's impossible to hold a good discussion.

Welcome! This topic has come up quite a bit, so you might want to scan the first few pages of the board to look for similar discussions.

That being said, I think the reasonable response would be to enjoy whatever talent we get and keep waiting for a franchise player if that player isn't the one.

Me and you both Rich. Lets look at the bright side though, this draft is pretty stacked. Sullinger is going to go around 5-6th pick and perry jones 9-12, last year these both would have been top 3 and Sullinger may have been first. So if we did get the 3rd or 4th pick we would have Beal (Drummond or MKG whoever doesn't get picked 2nd). For me, any of those players could really help our team and would be a number 1 or 2 pick in most years.

What if? What about tanking another season? Anyway, there are no marquee free agents this summer except Deron, who will probably be going elsewhere. In 2013, we'll have much more cap space, and we can still amnesty Tyrus. If not Davis, it is Shabazz Muhammad. Don't worry guys, with this losing culture and mentality, we will get a 1st pick sooner or later.

Seattle/OKC did not have the no 1 pick when they got Durant and we see how that worked for them. We are no OKC but I hope we can strive to be. I don't remember if Greg Oden was the consensus no 1, but see how that worked out too. yeah, if at first we don't succeed, we tank and tank again. lol

I will through multiple ink pens against the wall in my office and tear up my Byron Mullens poster in disgust.

Oden and Durant were consensus top 2 picks but the conventional wisdom was you never pass up a dominant big man when you get the chance to take him. Portland just had horrible luck, Oden wasn't an injury risk and averaged a double-double as a freshman against great competition. That's the only thing that may scare me about Davis - he had a fast growth spurt, and 82 games on a growing body could be a strain, but hell that's like saying Jordan wasn't a great 3-point shooter-you live with the risk, lol.

That's my fear about Davis. I don't want that Portland luck if we get him.

I actually just posted a similar thread over at the Huddle Bobcats section and was going to do my usual and come post it here as well and saw this... So, I'll just post my concerns into this thread:

After enduring such a horrible season... What if we don't get the #1 pick in the lottery and there is no Anthony Davis?

I don't see Kidd-Gilchrist, Robinson, or any other player available in those next 3 picks that would be a huge difference maker. I could see one of those guys being a 20 point scorer but not a difference maker and franchise player.

I hate to be so pessimistic about this, but I've always felt the draft lottery was rigged and I just keep thinking what a nightmare it will be if we purposely endured this season to get the top pick and yet, we don't get it.

Anyone remember a few years back when the Celtics sucked and players even came out and said they were purposely tanking for the #1 pick and they caught a bunch of flak for it? Well, guess what happened. They didn't get the #1 pick, lol.

We are modeling ourselves after the Thunder and they hit big time on Durant, Westbrook, Harden, Ibaka, etc. But, their front office has proven with those picks to be incredible evaluators of talent, even later in the draft. We have Cho now, but he hasn't done a lot as the sole move maker in a front office and Higgins has been pretty horrible.

So, my next question is, what if we miss on our pick. The only reason the Thunder got Durant was because the Blazers took Oden. We are the team that takes Oden, lol.

I just hope we hit on Kemba and BB this year and we'll see that come to fruition in years to come, and I certainly hope we get the #1 pick and Davis this year. Otherwise, I don't see much changing in regards to wins/losses and franchise prestige and tradition.
