The "Where did you go to school?" Thread

Yeah a lot of them go through law school, but aside from continued education and perhaps teaching, what could you do?

My sister has a bachelor's in history, she was working at a research firm in Charlottesville making bank. Then she decided to go back to school to get her PhD at UVA. There are various career opportunities for sure.

Going back to school is definitely part of my plan eventually, but in my experience, unless you want to get into a very specific field, just having a degree is what's important. I've worked in museums, worked for profitable websites, worked in offices, and worked at Trader Joe's, so I've done a little bit of everything. If a job listing just says "college degree required", I'm qualified.

EDIT: Also, history degrees lend themselves to becoming a teacher. If I went back to school and got my teaching certification, I would be able to find a job in no time. North Carolina is desperate for young, male teachers who can be a positive influence on the male students. I have friends who went right into teaching when they graduated, and they have great job security, and the hours are awesome.

The College of Business opened my Junior year, Convocation Center and biology village trailers were only thing on east side of 81

They both have large academic fields connected to them. If a person is choosing to be an English or History major, they likely are planning on working in those fields, teaching, or prepping for continued ed. For English, there's also MFAs, folks who want to pursue creative writing of some sort.

I was working at the new library, it just got renamed Rose Library, which was an awesomely fun and relaxed job for a guy who just graduated college. My best friend from high school had just graduated from JMU and gotten a house right in downtown Harrisonburg, and my other high school best friend was moving in, so I said fuck it and moved in as well. Luckily this library job came along so I didn't have to wait tables and I had a blast.

Basically I was in charge of a bunch of really cute 18-22 year old girls, running the library on the nights and weekends. Very fun.

Unfortunately, the summer has basically no hours for my position, my lease was up, and my best friends were leaving, so I moved on as well. Since I didn't go to JMU, honestly I can't even tell you much about what the place is like now versus how it used to be. I can tell you that I went to a bunch of awesome parties in Hunters Ridge though.

But it's so damn boring. I have such respect for teacher because I don't know how they do it. Upon graduation with a BA in English I gave it a shot and ended up talking basketball and movies and music and life with my freshmen and seniors but when it came down to the schoolwork/EOG bullshit I was as bored and unfocused as I was as a student. My severe ADHD was a significant reason for that but still...I'm in awe of all teachers.
