I might be playing a game of semantics here but people must have different definitions of tanking, because to my mind we certainly aren't tanking this year.

To me tanking is where you deconstruct your team to be intentionally uncompetitive in order to lose games. We did that last year.

This year we are reconstructing the team through playing young, promising players. We will try to win every game we play, though will probably manage it about 25% of the time. That, to my mind at least, doesn't constitute tanking.

    * Could we have made more of an effort in free agency to bring in veterans who would have helped us win more games this year? Yes.

    BUT ...

    * Did we decide not to do so simply because we didn't want to win as many games as possible (which would be tanking)? No, we decided not to do it because we want to develop our young players and take control of our cap.

The differences are subtle, but we aren't tanking this year.

It's josh Harrelson not Hamilton, but either way I don't want him. Big unskilled player, low ceiling.

Just because you deconstruct, doesn't mean you're only rebuilding for one year.

You could argue that they were reconstructing the team two years ago by getting draft picks for the vets and not just sending them off for pure cap space.

Also, it IS possible to tank and restructure at the same time. Many teams tanked towards the end of last year that have been "restructuring" for much longer than us.

We know we're not gonna be good but no way is dunlap tanking.Tanking implies trying to lose on purpose. That is not what's happening here. You could totally say that about last year because jordan was ready to not even have a season and didn't really bother to try and avoid the worst record. But i understand why he did it then.

It' not like that...think with a more strategic bent.

Our form of tank is taking a strategic position of getting one of the best chances for the top pick while also increasing the asset value of our current players...and one does not cancel out the other.

We'll be a lot more fun to watch this year. More attitude and hustle overall but esp. on defense. Our guys will start to learn how to actually play as a team and we'll stay in a lot more games (think our 1st season...no quit). It's still not going to win a lot of games though and we'll be one of the worst 3-5 with most likely a top 5 pick with good odds for the 1st overall.

And i still disagree that what your describing is tanking. We are building a team from the ground up and keeping future flexibility. That's being smart and doing it the right way.And i don't think the first pick has anything to do with it.We may very well be bad, but the goal of the team is to get the best players possible and develop them the proper way.I don't think the ownership is hell bent on sucking bad enough to purposely want to be in the discussion for the top pick.If it happens, then so be it!

If the goal of the team is to get the best players possible then why wouldn't the top pick be the main priority?

We don't have to get the 1st overall, but there's no doubt the best odds of getting a great player lies in the top few picks of the draft.

Like Kitch said above...I think we're just playing with semantics here.

I think the organization is focused on winning as many games as they can this year and worrying about the draft at the end of it. All of us expect the team to be one of the worst in the league but i doubt jordan, cho, dunlap, and the players are walking into a season resigned to that. Therefore, I don't beleive in any way that we are tanking. But we're adults and we can agree to disagree.
