    You're right! Forgot about that.

"The Long Walk", published under Richard Bachman. According to King it was the first book he ever wrote (per wiki).

One hundred teenage boys participate in an annual walking contest called "The Long Walk", which is the "national sport". Each Walker must maintain a speed of at least four miles per hour; if he drops below that speed for 30 seconds, he receives a verbal warning (which can be erased by walking for one hour without being warned). If a Walker with three warnings slows down again, he is "ticketed". The meaning of this term is intentionally kept vague at first, but it soon becomes clear that "buying a ticket" means to be shot dead by soldiers riding in half-tracks along the roadside. Walkers may be shot immediately for certain serious violations, such as trying to leave the road or attacking the half-track. The soldiers use electronic equipment to precisely determine a Walker's speed.
There's plans to do a movie of this one too.

9 Good Reasons why the Hunger Games is a rip-off of Battle Royale

First I'd heard of Battle Royale, so I dunno.

Maybe we should have a Stephen King short story/movie appreciation thread? The Long Walk, Running Man, Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me...

As for Battle Royale, I think it's pretty accepted that the Hunger Games author was unaware of its existence and it's not like kid sacrifice/battle motif is unheard of: Theseus and the Minotaur, Ender's Game, ^The Long Walk, etc. I heard Battle Royale is awesome though, so I'm looking forward to checking it out.

Just issued a challenge...what's a REALLY scary movie for an adult? Has to be realistic. I watch all sorts of horror and everything I've mentioned has been shot down. The only thing I've got a "maybe" on is "The Hills Have Eyes".

Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity...none of them moved the scale.

You have a couple of good ideas in there. Strangers might be about the closest to what my friend is looking for. The Shining was decent (Jack was stellar), 28 Days Later is a little too much like a zombie movie. The Others was pretty good but if I remember right the only part that made me really jump was when they were in the basement. SotL was good but I bet she's seen that one.

The main problem when you get older is that the stuff that scared the crap out of you at a younger age isn't believable anymore. Movies like Resident Evil, Hellraiser and the like are really good to me...but it doesn't do anything like the Exorcist did back in the day if you get what I mean.

I'm going to try google for a bit. Thanks for the suggestions.

There is only one movie that really scared me: 1408 (it could be some other number, but I thought it was 140. I won't tell you all of the details but I nearly peed my pants.
