Default Things That Make You Feel Old

Last winter I worked at a seasonal job working with groups of volunteers from all around the country. I had a group of teenagers come to my work area and they were all wearing "GMC" shirts. I asked what that meant and was told it stood for Greer Middle College, which was their high school. And immediately I was like, "PLEASE tell me your track team is called Run-GMC". They all stood at me blankly...some of them said "I don't get it."

    Got any good instant-geezer moments?

When I try to tell my kids that I grew up in a world that didn't have cell phones or the internet, they look at me like I must be a bazillion years old.

Just hip-hop in general. When people don't know Public Enemy or the Wu Tang Clan or Onyx, I feel like I might as be listening to big band music.

The instant need for sports scores...back in they day, you had to wait for the newspaper to get the prior day's box scores (that's assuming it wasn't a late west-coast game, which meant waiting an additional day).

If you wanted to play sports w/ another person, you had to actually go play the sport, not on XBox, Wii, PS3, etc.

I don't remember as a kid thinking that professional athletes were overpaid, how much they were paid wasn't even discussed much.

George Michael's Sports Machine..shown Sunday nights..(or every night if you were living in the Washington DC area)..this was closest thing to SportsCenter before ESPN arrived.

Your favorite college team recruiting a player and it was a forgone conclusion that he would be there for all 4 years.

Until I went to college..we had 4 channels...ABC, NBC and CBS...and this new thing called FOX

    Life without a remote control

I paid money for a 8 track, LP, 45, and cassette (the cassette was hi-fi) lol

When it use to hurt when you slammed your hand in a car door, now there is a lot of padding

    Lawn Darts

A mouse was something that you let your cat eat, not something you point and click

    CB radios in cars/passenger trucks

Who knew smoking was bad for you (the principal in my high school smoked at his desk)

Discipline: my middle school principal would hand his 6 inch knife to a student in trouble, tell them to go out in the back of the school to the Spruce tree and cut off a good switch for their whooping.

Seeing 20-somethings that don't workout, that eat like crap and drink beer everyday yet maintain 6 pack abs because of their friggin youthful metabolism makes me feel ancient.

    I also remember

--"Get off the computer, I need to use the phone!"
    --Watching Dale Earnhardt's crash
--"Apple Phone? That sounds like a stupid idea."
--Rugrats, Scooby Doo, All That, Rocket Power, etc.

    Crazy stuff:
    First VCR
New Tandy PC in the house!
New Apple IIe in the house!
Atari then NES and then Genesis, the greatest system ever.
IRC chat on friends' computers. (We didn't have a modem.)
Listening to music samples on line. Crazy amazing. Took crazy time, as they all had to be downloaded.

I remember playing this game on the Apple IIe (no color) and it was simply mind boggling.
