    Default Charlotte Interested in Scola

    Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine
More amnesty scuttle: I'm told Charlotte, New Orleans and Sacramento all have levels of Scola interest and weighing whether to lodge bids
I don't fully understand the amnestied player waiver process, but I would think we are prime candidates to sign him if we want him. He may be getting old, but he would upgrade the position.

    Thoughts?

This is a decent explanation of how the amnesty waiver process works.

    From http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2011/11...ndary-waivers/

And what, you may ask, is secondary waivers?

The details still need to be ironed out in “secondary negotiations” between lawyers from the league office and the, ahem, union, but there is going to be a bidding process for players released under the amnesty clause of the new collective bargaining agreement.

How will that bidding process work?

    Something like this:

Let’s say the Orlando Magic decide to release Gilbert Arenas, who has $62 million remaining on his contract over the next three years, including $19.2 milion in the upcoming season.

Arenas would first be placed on waivers, and it is safe to say that nobody is going to claim that contract during the 48-hour waiver period. But Arenas would then be placed on “secondary waivers,” and teams will space below the salary cap would be allowed to place bids on him. If the Sacramento Kings, to use a random example, were willing to spend $6 million to acquire him, and no one else made a higher bid, then he would become the Kings’ property (and the money the Magic would have to pay him this season would be reduced by whatever Arenas’ new team is paying him.)

Remember, all teams now must spend a minimum of 85 percent of the cap (rising to 90 percent in Year 3 and beyond) , and the Kings are currently $17.5 million below the minimum. So this will give many of the under-the-cap teams (a group that also includes Denver, Indiana, New Jersey, Washington and New Orleans) to do some bargain hunting prior to the opening of training camps Dec. 9.

“That’s what the clause is in there for,” a party familiar with the impending process told Ira Winderman of the South-Florida Sun Sentinel. ‘It’s so the Lakers can’t go in and scoop up all the players.’

Meh. He doesn't fit Dunlap's scheme well at all. No thanks.

I think we should go after him pretty hard. Scola is still fairly young (32) for a big man. He plays a game that doesn't rely on being a super athlete so I could see him having 5 good years left in him. He provides post scoring which we don't have a lot of and he fills a position of need.

I would probably bid 4 mil per year for a total of 3 years 12 mil. That is an absolute steal based on the numbers he put up last year and what guys have been getting this off season.

Scola's hair annoys the hell outta me. Also his play does not fit well at all here in Charlotte.

I'm all for it if the price is right, which it should be. Whether or not he "fits the system" is somewhat irrelevant when you're as desperate for talent as we are. I assume by "fit the system" people mean he won't be able to get out and run. I wouldn't worry about that. We aren't going to run fast break offense 48 minutes a game, and his inside scoring ability would be a huge asset for us. I'm interested to see what kind of bid we make, if we do in fact make one.

Not to mention, if Cho and Dunlap think that he can contribute to what we're trying to do, then let's get it done.

    Kemba/Sessions
    Henderson/Gordon
    MKG/JT
    Scola/Thomas
    Bizmack/FA or Mullens

That's a solid group of players.

A year or so ago, I'm all for it. Now? I don't really favor it. Maybe it was seeing Kevin Love punk his ass, lol. And I don't think he fits the system. I think he can fit in it, but I don't think he's ideal.

I really wish we would've gotten Hickson. I'm starting to wonder if the uptempo offense will make a positive impact on TT's game, but I can't allow myself to "hope" for anything when it comes to him anymore... Other than amnestying him.

I agree with the idea that Scola might not be the best fit as the starting PF, for example Jamison might be much better considering our brand new up tempo system. However, he's not a given, so we should go after Scola as hard as we can. He's still very productive, and, c'mon guys, he'll be the best low post scorer ever played for Bobcats by far. We aim to shoot the ball fast, what if we sometimes can't? What if we'll have to run some sets? We need a reliable low post scorer just as any other team, and Scola would be the ideal addition.

Considering the current roster, Tyrus is the starting PF (if not Biyombo), and probably nobody wants him here. So what? $ 4 million per year seems fair for me, although I believe we should go as much as $5-6 million. But Cavs should be going after him as well, because he's a much better fit for them than us.

But I'm not hopeful that we'll try hard, because we didn't bid for Brand, who is more or less the same type of player. Apparently Dunlap doesn't want these kind of players.
