I hope our Bobcats can win at least 20+ games.

My new screen name is a reflection of not knowing if the team will ever be renamed to the Hornets or any other name. I will give in a couple of seasons to see what happens before I decide whether to change the name or not.

i know its preseason but players put 100% in every game whether its playground(durant scoring 66 at rucker),summer lg(team recongintion),training camp(position battles) . but dunlap seems to be running a run and gun type philosophy and that style kinda cancels out defense. missed 3 pointers causes easy buckets and okc killed us in transition. also ,i know okc killed us in the paint but they also played their starting front court longer while we was experimenting.

the run and gun style worked for phoenix but for so long ,they had actual players who were built for that system. everybody on the suns ran the court whether it was defense or offense, so if they missed a 3pt they had marion who was able to recover on d at pf or a stoudamire at c ,which both were anomalies for their pos. that style semi-worked for the magics but they had a dominant force in the middle that allowed the offense to shoot more open shots and to play more freely. we don't have that luxury to be jacking 25 three pointer attempts a game.

im a fan of larry brown's system but i didn't agree with how he managed his players.lb didn't like to develop youth but his system was tough and defensive minded and it made the most out of what we didn't have. if we couldn't score no prob u won't score either .if your a lb player and your going to take a 3, you better be known to hit some , not to be taken 3's just because your open. we have the the players to run a defensive tempo game , we have the players to run an up tempo game ,but we don't have the players to run and gun with . yes i think we have better scorers than lb's team but not the personal to run dunlaps system .

d'antoni tried to duplicate that tempo with the knicks ; yes he had more scorers but he didn't have the players to rebound or cancel out the transistion. d'antoni had anthony who plays ok d but he's not going to hustle after a missed shot, d'antoni had stoudamire but he got the stoudamire after the 100 mil contract; that doesn't rotate, hustle or rebound.

i hope dunlap's just weighing out coaching options or whatever because its preseason but i hope this isn't our style for the future.

Gm there is two ways of thinking on how to get wins when you lack real offensive talent, theres the LB way slow it down and play Big Ten basketball. Or crank it up and basically turn it into a "track meet" always hated that phrase but with Dunlaps new regime it seems appropriate.

With the team we have theres the obvious limitation you point out, although I think with Biz, and MKG who both run the court extremely well it could work.

Obviously Dunlaps gone for the latter, but tbh even though it is far less fun to watch i'd prefer to go with the LB approach and make each and every single match a grind. Maybe thats an outdated way of thinking with all the top teams running up-tempo systems, OKC, Heat, Spurs, (Probably the Lakers now Nash is at the helm) but I prefer it.

what gave you that impression?is that they don't sweat , oh wait they play in their warm ups , or they don't care whether they miss or make a shot?

one thing about athletes they all are competitors , thats why you can see kobe play at local gym against some random guy and go black mamba on his ass, because they have a killer instinct and the one's that don't aren't in the nba or somewhere buried on the bench(besides talent).

derrick coleman had an good nba career, injuries side tracked him.

vince carter is having a great nba career, age caught up to him.

tim thomas had a lengthy and productive nba career, he had a sick wife that caused him to leave the nba .

lebron did more than enough for cleveland , more than any one player could do for any team , without his presence the cavs turned into the worst team literally after he left. he easily added 50 wins and took one of the worst talented teams to the finals. no point of blowing a knee out before free agency, but nobody knows really what happened anyway? the franchise had to do a full face lift after the he left .

So far i think hes been the perfect coach for our team . 4 hour practice unheard of in Bobcats history. Dunlap reminds me of coack K with his structured style. Then again he reminds me of Jimmy V with the influnce he has on his players. Guss most of you guys never seen Jimmy V coach . Any way i thought it would instresting to see your thoughts on Dunlap at this point befor the real season really starts.
I read the article in the CO and came away with two thoughts ...

First thought was as others have mentioned (as does the article), that you over practice to make the rigors of the game easier. The guys that train for a 3 round fight by having 10 round bouts tend to have the conditioning down. I tend to think that it has side-effects, when you are asked to think at 2.5 hours into a practice, you are exercising your ability to have better mental control than others. This might come to be the case - but I don't know how you can do these sorts of practices once the season gets underway.

My second thought and the one that I more consumed by is this: You can force everyone to the gym and make them work out for hours on end and you can force them to execute under your watch in a practice scenario too .... doesn't mean that they will or even can execute the same way in a game scenario and doesn't guarantee they are learning anything. Professional athletes need to hone their craft, it needs to be something of how they regard themselves as professionals. I fear that with such a young group of players, there are very few that are true craftsmen to be models for others to learn from. I continue to read how Bismack lives at the gym and maybe he will be that guy. It might be a while before that comes to pass - maybe it's Carroll or maybe it's Haywood ... don't know. I do hope that at some point, we see the benefits of both coach(es) and players honing their craft though.

see, now you are deviating from your original argument

each one of the examples i provided were of players who either had an underwhelming career because they were notorious for coasting or in lebron's case was a single example that proves your argument wrong.

You're being ridiculous. Yes, its nice to think that all athletes play at the same level as your favorite Under Armor commercial, but that is simply not the case - especially when these guys know the difference between a meaningless preseason game and a finals appearance. If you've ever even been to a game, then you'd be able to instantly describe the chasm between preseason and playoff intensity. They're nowhere remotely close. They're hilariously far apart. In preseason, you have some guys that are playing for a roster spot and guys that have been in the league for over a decade - even before going into further detail, its obvious that those two types of players would have varying goals and perspectives towards preseason.

Kobe is one of the very, very, VERY few people that (often against his coaches and FO's wishes) plays with a high level of intensity throughout the year. MJ has said himself that that type of mentality is incredibly rare. But even then you won't see Kobe unhinge his jaw while playing some kid in China in the offseason.

Preseason intensity and regular season are worlds apart. And every single year there are a dozen rookie blogs saying the same thing "Nothing could've prepared me for the change in the level of play" etc.

Its nice that you have a solid respect for all athletes at all times of the year, but to say that they all bring their best effort at all times is untrue. And for a multitude of reasons. I honestly believe that people are putting an absurd amount of scrutiny and speculation into a post-lockout preseason for a lottery team that doesn't even get to have their games televised.
