    Default Henderson extension talks...

I have barely heard anything about Hendo getting his contract extended. I think it would be a mistake to not extend him considering how crazy qualifying offers have been the last couple of years. At this point we are in a extend him or lose him situation in my opinion.

Byron Mullens is in the same boat. I think we could get him for about 3 million a year and I think thats well worth the risk. However if Byron has a breakout year we likely lose him as well

Byron would probably rather play out the year than lock in for low right now. probably irrelevant for Hendo

I think you've got to let him walk. He's not a starter on a 1-6 seed playoff team, and giving him ANYTHING prevents you from being able to offer two max (or close to it) deals in 2014. Just keep the guys that are still on their rookie deals, future draft picks, and vets making very little like Haywood. This team could actually be pretty good as soon as 2014 if Cho is smart with the salary cap and his draft picks. Re-upping Henderson kills your flexibility though. Quite frankly, if Cho thought there was some team that valued him now, I would couple him with Tyrus & try to move him for an equally onerous contract that at least ended a year earlier, plus a conditional first. If you can move Hendo for say the #22 pick and you no longer have to worry about amnestying Tyrus down the road, then I'd call that a giant win.

What if Henderson vastly improved over the summer and puts up 22, 4 rb 4 ast on 45% shooting. I think Henderson is better than a lot of fans think. He is definitely better than derozan and derozan will probably get 10 million a year on the market

Then I'd say let him take those stats to the open market, get an offer from another team, we probably won't match, so then we can all wish him well in his new city. The 'Cats really aren't in a position to gamble their (desperately needed) future flexibility on the chance that he might take that "next step" this season. Besides, I'm generally skeptical of gaudy numbers put up on bad teams anyway. I mean somebody has to score points even on the worst teams, right?

But basically you are suggesting we lose 2 of our most promising young assets in order to go after Lebron and Cousins in 2014?

Well no, not really. Having the ability to offer two max contracts and actually using the money that way are two different things. Cho can break it up however he wants: 2 guys, 3 guys, 4 guys, etc. Point is I'd rather have the money in the future than the player now when we're this bad. There will always be guys sitting there on the free agent market with Hendo's skill level, more than happy to take our money.

If Hendo qualifies as "one of our most promising young assets" then I think that says a lot more about the rest of our young talent than it does Hendo's status as a prospect.

Are you sure? I could have sworn I read 5 PM EST today.

I want to re-up Mully more than Hendo but I don't want to overpay anyone. No bidding against ourselves.

    Nope, you're right:

Ken Berger: Correction: Extension deadline is midnight ET tomorrow, not 5 p.m
