Definately the counter argument and a valid one is that it is possible to capture those incremental season tickets without spending the 3 million... Although nothing has shown they are anywhere close to selling out the arena with season ticket holders. Thousands of seats are available, so to assume they can sell out the arena by next season and keep it sold out is in my opinion less realistic than changing the name and creating 1k new STH. (meaning even if the Bobcats retained all current STH and added 2k more on top, there is still room in the arena to add 1k through the name change and reach break even)

Can we agree that 1k incremental season ticket holders or even 500 incremental season ticket holder over 2 seasons is a realistic goal that could be achieved fairly simply if even 10% bringbackthebuzzers are true to their word and buy tickets?
I can speak for myself and will buy 2 in season one and 4 per season after that ( I have a newborn so, won't buy 2 tickets for wife and daughter in season 1 but, will buy 2 for me and my son). Those are pretty simple sales goals to reach break even and that doesn't include and incremental dollars from merchandise.

Does anyone disagree that 3 million break even could be easily achieved within a season possibly 2? Please be objective..

Personally, Bee-Fense is my favorite chant ever at a sporting event.

If they were the Oklahoma City Bobcats, they would still sell out every night. And if we were the Charlotte Thunder (or Hornets, for that matter), this team still would not. So can we at least put that argument aside? Furthermore, merchandise revenue is split between the teams. MJ is technically already getting money from Charlotte Hornets sales, is he not?

Hornets is certainly a "cooler" nickname than Bobcats, and I love the historical tie for sure (and hold a personal preference for the colors), but I've also really bought into the new uniforms and focus of this Bobcats team, particularly after last year's shit storm. Just brings a smile to my face seeing Kemba and MKG rolling around in those 'Cats jerseys.

Anyways, as QC said, MJ has managed to turn his whole persona into probably the most dominant image in sports, and this from a dude wearing ripped up acid wash jeans every day. He knows the right people, we're in good hands, and whatever happens, those of us who care will get to see a young, entertaining team grow and mature and hopefully create some awesome memories for kids today like many of us have for the old Hornets.

I doubt a name change would do anything other than confuse people who are fringe fans. This is just an opinion.

Point 1. No doubt that if we had the Thunders roster we would sell out. Charlotte is a fair weather fan town.... The Thunder (actually Sonics drafted him) were lucky to draft a sure fire hall of fame player with no ego that has no issue playing in a small market. I think that's happened twice since 1998 (Duncan and Durant)... Merchandise sales are split evenly but, your missing two important factors 1. If the Charlotte Hornets outsell the Charlotte Bobcats in merchandise and the rest of the league is flat, the entire merchandise account is higher, so MJ would get a bigger check. A rising tide lifts all boats 2. I'm almost certain that each team keeps All merchandise revenue sold inside their arena/ team store. So the team can reap more money from merchandise sales.

    2. Can't disagree with that. The team hit an absolute home run with the new jersey's and I love our young players(I still wish they would entirely kill off the orange from the other merchandise though)... The fact that they would be running around in Hornets jersey's is just as exciting for me.

    3. Agree 100%

This is the problem I have with Bring Back the Buzz. Yes, the founders go to games, but the group itself seems to be made up of "fans" who would suddenly begin supporting the basketball team because the name was changed. Why aren't they supporting the team now? Why must it come to a name change to suddenly start caring again?

This is what irritates me. We're not dealing with Charlotte Bobcats fans, we're dealing with fans of a name and a brand. When the Hornets name comes back suddenly its cool to root for the team again. There's something wrong with the fan base if a name change is what gets people to buy tickets rather than the team itself.

I've explained before. I'm a previous season ticket holder, I was turned off by many things with the experience not the product on the floor. I even had lunch with Bob Johnson personally to discuss my concerns with how the season ticket experience needed to be improved.

I took a sales manager position with my company for 3.5 years that had me travelling across the country at least 3 nights per week that made being a season ticket holder a bad proposition because I never knew when I would be home. I attended the games I could.

I accepted a promotion 4 months ago and I'm now located at a home base and no longer travel, making it a reality that I can/will be a STH again.

I attend games now when i can but, am not currently a full season ticket holder ( I have a 3 month old newborn at home) that made me decide I couldn't dedicate 41 nights worth if games this season.

I am very much a Bobcats fan, as are many bring back the buzzers. If you've been to any games I'm sure you've seen all the Hornets gear that is being worn to the games.

The name is important to many people that feel like the NBA turned their backs on the them after years of the best support in the NBA. I don't care why people choose or choose not to go to games, if changing the name makes them take more interest and spend more money than I support that.

The math is easy... 1,000 fans avg. 73 dollars per game for 1 season and the rebrand is paid for.

No matter what side of the name change fence you fall on, we need to hope that the fan support increases because MJ can't continue to suffer $20-30m dollar losses and stay in business here in Charlotte.

Wearing another team's jersey to the game is a disservice to the Bobcats players no matter how you look at it.

That's very simple math. That's assuming each ticket sale is 100% profit for the bobcats and they have no incremental costs for accomodating each fan. That's also assuming they don't take advantage of any promotions they run (i.e. Buy One Seat get a second seat free) But look we can spin numbers however you want. The bottom line is you don't know how many additional fans a name change will bring in. 1,000 new season ticket holders is a huge over statement IMO. I've seen the BBTB outing your posse put together last year and it wasn't close to that.

Ziggy- I agree if it's the team you are playing. For example the thousands of Knicks fans that filled the arena 2 nights ago.

If I'm cheering my ass off for the Bobcats, and I'm wearing a Charlotte Hornets hat and shirt, I can't see how that is is disservice to the players in any way shape or form.
    1. I'm cheering for them
    2. I'm helping to pay their salary with my ticket revenue.
    3. The are making money of a percentage of my Hornets hat and shirt.

Going by your logic, everyone not wearing Jordan Brand attire is doing a disservice to our owner.

I don't believe that's true. I believe the New Orleans Hornets are making money on that hat and shirt, even though it says CLT.
