I'm not sure that I really want his involvement, but it's interesting that he spoke out.Shinn, 71, backs up a little and says he isn’t telling Jordan what to do.
“If Michael sees fit, I’d like to help,” Shinn says.
He says the Hornets nickname would be great for Jordan, Jordan’s team and the community.
“It was never my name,” says Shinn. “It belonged to Charlotte.”

Not to get off topic but, how many of you were around when Jordan tried to buy minority ownership in the Hornets?
This was before he bought part of the Wizards and came out of retirement and made Abe Pollan a shit load of money...
Can you imagine if Shinn would have made it work with Jordan instead of Ray Woolridge?
Michael would have came out of retirement on a pretty good Hornets team and the entire history of Charlotte sports would be different.
In the end, we still have an NBA team owned by the Goat and that's great but imagine that we maybe could have an NBA championship...

I was here then. MJ's take on it was...I'll pay you (and I'm making up the percentages) 10% now for 20% ownership. Shinn didn't think that made sense and MJ said, well, after i'm involved, it will double in value, so you need to sell me more for less.
Shinn balked and Woolridge ran the negotiations into a ditch.
The NBA never would've left, Charlotte would've voted for a new uptown Arena and the build-out around the Arena would've had a 2-3 year head start.
Ironically, it was probably one of Shinn's worst decisions (and he had more than his share).
Yes, I remember that. Everything would have turned out much different I believe.
I remember the story being Shinn was going to agree to those terms with MJ, but his stuck up ass kids didn't want him to do the deal, so he gave in to their wishes and refused to sell. Probably among the many reasons why he feels he owes us in some way.
But after Shinn shunned MJ the first time around, I agree - put up some money, otherwise stay the hell out of the way.
Found a link with some references to what happened in the Shinn/Jordan proposed deal back in 1999. Really interesting stuff:
