I actually can see good logic in the Pau trade. Getting him would not be for us or for building our foundation, at least not directly. At this point, we're 10-31, and adding him this year won't improve us too much out of the top pick runnings. Maybe we go 15-26 the rest of the way - 25 wins will still keep us right at the top of the lottery.
But this would be great for the offseason before the draft. He can probably get back to his 20-10 averages with us. Once all the contenders see that he's still got it, there will probably be a bidding war for his services. I'm sure the Knicks, bulls, thunder, spurs, nets, insert contender, would love to add a versatile scoring/rebounding/passing big. This opens up a ton more options for Cho to explore, since Gasol by himself would be much more valuable than Ben Gordon or a mid teens pick.
It's like that Barter Wars tv show, or whatever it's called. You just keep trading up your assets for slightly higher and higher value, and at the end you have enough value to trade for what you really want, without as much investment as you would have at first.
