Default Our Cap Situation for Next Year

Not sure if this deserves its own thread but, with all of the talk of signing a MAX free agent this offseason, I wanted to dedicate a thread to show people what we have to work with. (we are not in as good of shape as some think)

I'm not the certified capologist, so If I have something messed up- please correct me.

Also, because I don't have information for what the cap will be next year, I made assumptions based on it being flat. I also assumed we will retain Jeff Adrien and put in QO's for both Hendo & Mully.

    2013-14
    Ben Gordon- 13,200,000
    Tyrus Thomas- 8,694,215

    Hakim Warrick- 4,000,000
    Bismack Biyombo- 3,049,920
    Kemba Walker- 2,568,360
    Brendan Haywood- 1,900,000
    Jeffrey Taylor- 788,872
    CHARLOTTE TOTALS- 44,011,207

    Hakim (TO) (4,000,000)

    Adj CHARLOTTE TOTALS- 31,316,992

    + QO- Gerald Henderson- 4,267,424
    + QO- B.J. Mullens- 3,293,975
    + TO- Jeff Adrien-916,099
    + Our 1st round pick # 1 OA-5,144,280
    + PDX Pick #14 OA-1,823,280
    Adjusted Total- 46,762,050

    2012-2013 Cap $ 58,004,000
    2012-2013 Luxury Tax Lvl $ 70,300,000
    Approximate Cap Space $ 11,241,950

Article on espn insider that quoted Higgins speaking to the observer had excerpts from a letter sent to sth saying we'd have 20 mil to spend next season and that we'd target max level guys and "the very best free agents available"

If $11mm is the real figure we have to work with then max contract talks are moot. Are you counting Mully's/Hendo's QO twice?

Well, that's why it may be prudent to just let Henderson and Mullens walk. If you take out those two qualifying offers you're under $40 million committed and you have max space and then some. It's nice that they're decent players and all, but you can't throw money at every rotation guy to come through town just because they play hard.

If we don't fully guarantee Jeff Adrien and we don't make QO to Mully & Hendo we would have ~19.6 Million (remember that's with a flat cap, the cap could go up)

I cleaned it up, so that its not confusing where Mully, Hendo and Adrien are listed.

Add in possible Tyrus amnesty. If only Ben wouldnt exercise his player option but he'll be doing that

Good info, Gib. I'm absolutely fine with the cap situation as it is for next year. I'm among those that want to stink it up for one more year and get another top 3 pick in the '14 draft (of course, Wiggins would be the dream) and to do that we probably shouldn't target a "max" guy. But whatever, I trust Cho.

I still don't think they will amnesty Tyrus Thomas. Maybe if they had a guy worth Max in their sites, but I'm with Beagle... we aren't going huge until after 14 if at all. It wont help us to free up money for Tyrus, especially when you are still paying him.

Amnesty really makes no sense for a small market team building through the draft.

100% agree. We need to suck for 1 more season and if the ping pong Gods finally smile on Charlotte, we could have a Championship calibre team for a decade.
