They'd be stupid to trade for him now. They have PLENTY of space this summer and Hendo isn't in the salary range where you need a QO just to keep him. Offer him 8-9 a year (See Joe with Gordon/Charlie V). We won't match and no other team would offer up that kind of coin trying to outbid them.

This is why you deal Hendo now for what you can get to a contender.

this is a cba/cap question. would they have an advantage with him already on the roster, if they maxed offered josh smith in FA and really really wanted hendo. ie could they go over the cap because he is already on their roster? maybe this is why they would consider a trade now.

I believe your own FAs still count against your roster unless you renounce all rights to them, at which point you could not sign them over the cap. So, you couldn't have three free agents and $15m cap room not including those guys, sign a $15 FA, and then resign all of your guys.

29,760,000 committed and around 4.5 million of Stuckey's contract is unguaranteed (can be bought out for around 4 million) + English can also be cut. That could feasibly get them down to around 25 million with the same free to spend up to the cap along with the mini mid, etc.

BUT yeah, assuming they want to give Smith 14-15 million, Caleron 10 and Hendo 8 then the bird rights on Hendo would definitely help.

So let's trade 'em Hendo for an asset. What though? I guess a 2nd plus less protection on their 1st is better than nothing.

Very true. Anyone want to go to the CBA FAQ and figure out the capholds? I'd guess Caleron's would be his previous salary, but Hendo's would have a multiplier being on a rookie contract.

So yeah, ignore my last example. Capholds would most likely torpedo DET doing what I just said.

I would trade Henderson and Biyombo for Drummond and run like I stole my mama's car!

I'll laugh if the Brooklyn trade falls through and we end up trading Hendo to Detroit for Jerekbo, English and reduced protection on their pick.

I don't fully understand the two Bird-4 year scenarios, but it appears to be at least a $6M hold until he signs a new contract.

And on a sidenote: the idea of going and looking at that FAQ seems really annoying and boring. Then I get there and can't stop reading.

I just looked thru that FAQ and couldn't find the multiplier for players coming off rookie scale contracts but I know it's more than 100% of their previous salary. I finally gave up and looked elsewhere...best I could find was this:

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/...pares-last-one

Free agents and restricted free agency

2005 CBA: A cap hold of 150 percent to 300 percent continues to count against the team's cap for its free agents who have Bird rights or were first-round picks. A team has seven days to match an offer sheet to its restricted free agent. Qualifying offers to restricted free agents are based on the player's draft position.
2011 CBA: Cap holds are reduced for most players who have Bird rights or were first-round picks, and now range from 150 percent to 250 percent. Teams have three days to match an offer sheet to its restricted free agent. Players can qualify for a better qualifying offer by meeting certain criteria. High-drafted players might receive a lower qualifying offer by failing to meet the same criteria.
I think it's at least 1 1/2 times last years salary and could be up to 2 1/2 times.

Coon probably has it in there and I'm probably missing it. Wish he had a search function.

Edit: and I keep forgetting Hendo was a teens pick. 6 million sounds about right.
