I think we can agree that the $ spent on Tyrus Thomas is already wasted no matter if he's on our roster or someone else's because he's not even getting a jersey and evidently is such a distraction that the team feels it would be better if he didn't even accompany them on road trips.... I see your point ( and it's a good one) on the incremental $'s that would have been needed to acquire the first round pick and that's a lot of coin for a late 20's pick. ( we don't have a second rounder this year)

I disagree that the guys aren't worth talking about. Speights would be our best post player, he had a terrific game last night and is avg'ing 11 & 6 while only playing 20 minutes a game for Cleveland.

I don't see any situation where Tyrus is not amnestied this summer.

I do blame Larry Brown and I never had one of those ILBIT signatures.... The trade for Tyrus was questionable at best at the time and looks even worse when compounded by the 2nd mistake of his new contract.... he almost signed with New Jersey that summmer, I sooo wish he would have. I would much rather us had looked like idiots only for giving up a 1st for a 3 month rental of TT instead of the 1st & the contract.

I agree with the rebuilding... just hard to stay optimistic that it's going to be quick of effective considering the projected impact of this years rookies.

    Default pick

Essentially your talking about spending 25-28 Million dollars on nothing. You get Memphis' first round pick, but right now they are tentatively in the 26th spot. Only 5 spots ahead of where we will have a pick regardless (31. First in the second round)st 15-16 Million dollars to play against us. Not to mention the salaries you would take

We dont have a second round pick this year

If you remember we did make unofficial offers to Brooke Lopez, Goran Dragic, Antwan Jamison, Carl Landry, etc. If one of those would have signed Tyrus would have been amenestied. None of them signed so there was no reason to use the amensty for no reason. It was worth one more chance seeing if he had anything left of value. Keep in mind there is a salary floor in the new CBA.

I imagine they will make a run at someone this summer such as Milsap, Jefferson, etc. Tyrus would then be amenestied.

Amnesty $'s count towards the salary floor but, not the salary cap. So, we didn't need Tyrus to actually be on this team in order for his dollars to count towards reaching the floor.

I don't think Thomas is going to be doing much playing against anyone. The guy has zero motivation.

We should have done the smart thing in the first place and drafted Brook Lopez instead of DJ Augustin. A Walker, MKG, and Lopez core is a solid start. Then you add in pieces like Sessions, Gordon, Biz, and Henderson and it is hard telling how much better this team could have been. I remember jumping up and down during that draft when the Cats pick was up and Lopez was on the board. Then we drafted Augustin and I remembered what it meant to be a Bobcat fan. Haha

Well, it's already been pointed out that this years' second rounder was traded for Mullens. However, Minnesota owns Memphis' first round pick this year - that isn't what Cleveland got. The pick that Memphis conveyed to Cleveland can't be conveyed until 2015, and has top-5 and 15-30 protection in 2015 and 2016, just top-5 protected in 2017 and 2018, and unprotected in 2019.

It wouldn't have been so much overpaying for a late first as it would have been gambling that you can pick up a mid-to-late lottery pick several years down the line when Randolph and Prince break down and Memphis rebuilds around Gasol. If you assume that Cho does a good job of building the team and Charlotte's no longer a lottery team in that general time frame, the opportunity to add a lottery talent to what will then be a team of young veterans might pay big dividends down the road.

Regardless of where the pick ends up, I think its alot to pay for a pick, that you will then have to pay as well. Especially when the gamble is for the chance at a late lottery.

But my point is more that I think frustration at Cho in this case is unwarranted. Dealt a shit hand, you can't expect him to make a royal flush every time.

Also, I find it hard to summon outrage over it. Like JGib said, he is a waste on the roster or off of it. Unless you can save money/get a great pick/or wring an ounce of decent ball out of Tyrus... just let him sit. No need to spend money to get rid of him.

I don't agree, at least when we're talking about the team moving forward (giving Dunlap a season to try to do something with Tyrus I understand). Because amnestied players count against the salary floor, but not against your actual cap figure, amnestying him and replacing him with a D-league star on a minimum deal (like Jeff Adrien) allows you to sit on more cap space than would otherwise be allowed in a market where the beefed-up luxury tax has teams more conscious of their spending than ever. Being able to absorb a big contract without sending anything out puts you in the drivers' seat when it comes to trade season.

EDIT: Next year is the first season that teams have to spend 90% of the salary cap and also the first year the incremental luxury tax kicks in. Having a whole bunch of extra cap space is going to be both more rare and more valuable going forward. It will be a solid way to pick up something valuable going forward.

IIRC, any team below the cap can put in a claim on Tyrus if he's amnestied, meaning that portion of his salary would not have to be paid by the Bobcats. Who knows if it'll happen, but there might be a team willing to gamble a million for the next two seasons. Not a whole lotta risk there for a team like Dallas.
