That game last night is exactly what I expect out of MKG. His defense against Carmelo was phenomenal. On NBATV they showed a graphic that Melo was 4-19 from the field when being guarded by MKG last night. He also got to the foul line a few times when MKG was guarding him but I thought at least two or three of those were "superstar" calls where he just basically barrelled through MKG and MKG was called for the foul. But his defense was absolutely tenacious. He was all in Melo's face and did a great job of staying on his feet and not biting on the pump fakes. Last night proved to me that he can be one of the best defenders in the league and lock down almost any opposing SF.
Also, that is exactly what I expected out of him on offense. He was aggressive going to the rim which got him to foul line and ran the floor hard in transition getting easy layups. The eight rebounds were nice as well.
If he ended this season with an average of 12-14 ppg, 7-8 rpg and plays that kind of defense on a nightly basis I will be more than happy with him.
Best part about it from my POV? He thought it was "fun"!

I was thinking the exact same thing. I know it's impossible to shutdown one of the most gifted scorers of all time, but damn, I've never seen anyone give Carmelo that much trouble before. Especially since in the first half he was shooting right over top of everyone like he was practicing in a gym by himself, he seemed he was in such a rhythm that was then summarily disrupted by MKG.
It's impossible for normal humans to guard Carmelo because he's too quick for big guys, and too strong for quick guys. But when he tried to back MKG down, there was actually some push back, some resistance in those deceptively strong limbs of his. And he couldn't get by him off the dribble because MKG has such quick feet and instincts, and he's too disciplined to fall for those little pump fakes.
3 blocks on Carmelo in one game? Has that ever happened before? He almost made him look...ordinary.
And until I learn how to get better highlight clips, here's my bootleg version of my favorite play. MKG chases down NBA scoring champion Melo on the break and snuffs out his unworthy layup attempt, keeps the ball himself, charges back down court right at Tyson Chandler and maneuvers around him like he's just a traffic cone instead of a former defensive player of the year and scores easily. How many other players in the league can claim to have done that on both ends of the floor against the standard bearers at their respective side of the ball:

We all know one of MKG's biggest upsides is his man-to-man defense. last night was a good example of this. I don't want to be crude, but I'd like him to improve in the vocal aspect a bit too. Biz and Adrien as well made a huge leap forward in that category; telling people where to go and what to do, especially for Biz it's a big turnaround compared to last year, it's like he is seeing the whole picture now. What he's doing now may be working great against forwards who have to carry their team with their scoring (Melo, Turner, Gay, Durant?) but I don't think it's going to be that effective against the Lebron's and Iguadala's in the league.
Yeah he's been great these past two games. If he can keep out of foul trouble he'll be amazing for us this season

played the entire 4th Q with 5 fouls and still was aggressive on D.....great game from MKG
I don't want to be Debbie Downer by any means, since there's about 10 people on here who are nothing but that.
We drafted him to be the best defensive player on the floor, and hopefully be at least competent offensively. I EXPECT that from him every night. Yes, it's good to see, but it's not like this came out of nowhere.
EDIT: MrsZeller? How did I not notice this? Have we had a legitimately attractive female member before??

Yes, we expected MKG to do this. His absolute worse case scenario was supposed to be Gerald Wallace before he got a jumper.
MKG's rebounding is still somewhat below what I'd want, I'm pretty sure if I went back and pulled some of my own posts, I was expecting 15/8 from him as a rookie. He's still not there yet, but he's getting closer.
And ahh, nice!
