I don't agree that Cho should be on the hot seat, but my faith is not as strong as it was going into the season. Big Al has been a very solid signing, but beyond that we've done a relatively poor job navigating FA and while I've far from given up on MKG and Zeller, it's clear there were much better players available at the time both those guys were selected.
I believe that Cho has a process and that he's at a minimum competent, but I can't shake the feeling that we're making too many decisions based on need and not nearly enough on a BPA basis, especially in the draft. FA is about filling needs, the draft is a delicate mix, but ultimately when you pick in the high lottery you have to select BPA, even if you're already committed to a player at the position.
That's why I'm a little scared about the 2014 draft, because I'm afraid will pass on a potentially elite PF, SF, or PG since we've committed high picks to those positions in the past. Personally, I don't think we're anywhere near set at any of those positions, except maybe PG, and I still feel that if the opportunity arose to draft a guy like Marcus Smart, with no player of similar value/potential available at another position, we would pass. Same with selecting Gary Harris over a higher upside big, like say Noah Vonleh, because we're less committed to Hendo than we are Zeller. That sort of thinking is a recipe for disaster imo.
Hopefully we go into the 2014 draft and finally take care of business. I think we can reasonably expect to pick in the 8-10 range, the 12-15 range, and then the 20+ range. We have to make good on those picks. Poor draft selections have long been the achilles heel of this franchise. That hasn't really changed under Cho, but it has to, or else he deserves to be on the hot seat if not fired.
One thing he did get right was Clifford. I'm incredibly confident in him as a coach at the moment. But we still have entirely too much dreck on the roster. Part of that has to do with injuries, but the players being replaced by pure dreck aren't that good to begin with. Hopefully that changes after the 2014 draft. It simply has to.
