Bobcats sign Ely for 1 year contract

We are set at the big position I mean Emeka, May, Ely, Othello and Hollins.

I\'ve always heard that you can\'t have enought good players. However, I think we have a log jam as far as big guys go. Only Emeka has had a season that would lead me to belive that he is going to be a better than average player, I don\'t think he\'ll be an all-star any time soon. The other 4,

May-I loved this guy in college, he has a huge heart and a really smart basketbally IQ. still he needs time to become a quality player in the NBA.

Othello- Has never shown me that he can be any better than a role player in the NBA.

Hollins- Way too early to tell about him probably will not see action in every game this year. Might pick up some garbage minutes.

Ely- Will have a game where he really shows heart and then turns around and acts unhappy and lazy.

We had the money to spend on him and Othella but neither are any more than insurance players IMO.

I\'m sure we could have spent our money better.

For practical purposes, they need to trade Melvin Ely. He isn\'t a superstar by any means, but hes too good to only get 4 or 5 minutes a game behind Emeka and May. Othella can fill that 4 or 5 minute a game role.

I think its a great move by the the Bobcats.It sends a message to the rest of the league we not trading a average player for some ones junk.I think it puts us a in position to make a fair trade for Ely after the season starts.Some one is going to need a big and be willing to give up a decent player for one.
Hats off to the Bobcats to for not trading ELY and or Wallace for some one elses trash....

I don\'t think it\'s a great move. Yes, it sends a message to other teams, but how could our board be so sure to get a fair trade next summer? We have a logjam at power-forward position, and I don\'t think that Ely will get sufficient minutes to show himself off and increase his trade value. We might get nothing in return. We cannot find even a Devin Brown.

I think we will look at the ways to trade him in the middle of regular season.

Bernie said Ely and his agent are still talking with teams til season starts.All so if teams have a big go down early in the season.The Bobcats will get a call quick for the price we paying him and the short term of his contract.We will get a better offer than we have got so far. If not we got Ely one more year .Its not going to cost us a arm and leg and we all know he can contribute.

Just think of the crap we picked up last year be cause we had a need of a big.Ely makes Baxter look like a high school player. I truely think its a good move not to trade just to be tradeing .Who ever you get needs to be able to help the team.

Keeping him right now is a win win situation. If we cant get the good stuff for him... we just keep him and have that much more depth for when oakafor hurts that ankle again, or Sean May goes on a big mac spree.

on the flip side, say a team that is weak at the 4 or 5 loses a big man. Elys trade value then skyrockets. Keeping Ely on our bench for now is the best move possible. we could end up with a solid 2 guard if a contending team gets desperate for a big man. or maybe even as much as a late first round pick. its like a stock, you hold it till you think you cant possibly get anymore for it. then when the right offer comes... YA SELL.

Mustachio and davz7, those are both excellent points. If a contending team loses a big man, then maybe we could take them to the cleaners in a deal that ships Ely out of town.

If they ship Melvin Ely sometime during the season to a contender, that would be a good opportunity to move Brevin too. They could package them both up and give some contender additional depth at two positions.
