    Default Kurt Thomas to Sonics

    http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ar...cks_to_sonics/

Suns get: conditional second round pick (and the trade exemption)
Sonics get: Kurt Thomas, Suns 2008 and 2010 first round picks.

Some version of this deal was rumored to be coming the Bobcats way before the draft. I sure wish we could have made that happen. Even though Thomas isn't that mobile, he could have given us some big help in the half court and helped our bigs. Plus, the added bonus of the first round picks is huge.

He appeared to only have one year on his contract too, which would have been perfect.

That would have been a sweet pick up or us. I wonder why we couldn't get it done?

I really think we would've done this deal before the draft had we not been working on trading for JRich. Probably the main thing Phoenix wanted besides getting rid of the Thomas contract was the trade exception that Seattle offered, and of course we had to give ours to GS for JRich.

But we could still take him. We would absorb him before signing Wallace or Carroll, doesn't matter. 2 first rounders are really charming.

The trade exception is generated by a team not receiving anything in return. A team doesn't just have a trade exception, like the MLE, and gives it up. As long as we had cap space to absorb the contract, we could have done the trade. For instance, we didn't have a trade exception that we used on Richardson. When they traded him to us without receiving significant salaries in return, they then get essentially a credit to trade for that amount with another team.

That's one of the reasons why writers need to be careful when they explain such things in articles. One site gave us a bad draft grade because they thought we gave up this thing we had sitting around that simply never existed.

You're right, but never mind. It's difficult to believe how unintelligent some of them are how they are still stuck to the business and make living by writing crap. But we can still find the smartest ones and keep reading them.

My mistake, I actually knew the rule at one time, but as you both say, just about every article I read says something different, and they brainwashed me into believing it over time.
