I thought the exact same thing and commented on it at the time.

Y'all diehard Carolina folk should expand on Phil Ford. I know some but I'm not an insider.

Wasn't he the "go between" at UNC under Smith (and Gut) too? If I remember the stories right he was all the players' "buddy". Did Dougherty let Ford go to later be hired by Brown at Detroit...how long was Ford there during Felts' freshman year?

I read they were friends, but I assume all Carolina players are.

Is he worth a damn coaching wise or has he been living off the "blue" all this time?

I don't know about him being the player's "buddy". If anybody was, it was Guthridge during Smith's reign. He committed career suicide when he was caught either DUI or DWI (don't rightly know the difference) as a very strong candidate for the Michigan job in the late 90s.

He was let go when Doherty was hired, and so was never on the staff while Raymond was there. He did radio for the Tarheel network during from '01-'03, I'm pretty sure, before he joined Brown after '04 in Detroit. So he was in Chapel Hill for Raymond's first two years years, and was encouraged to work with Raymond during his sophomore year (i.e. Roy's first year).

As far as coaching, I really don't know; he was known as more of a recruiter while at UNC, which is why he had lots of interest from colleges before his DUI/DWI. I'd like to think with all the years spent as an assitant in both college and pros, he knows what he's doing and does it well, but I have no real evidence or anything. I think it's a little bit of both, having Carolina ties and being knowledgeable about the game as to how/why he's our assistant.

The knicks are wanting D'ant and are said to be offering him a 5yr deal. Thus leaves Mark Jackson out. We could bring him in under LB for a couple of years grooming him into the system and then turn it over to him when LB leaves.

I have to say, I thought Mark Jackson had the Knicks job. If we could get him to tutor under LB for a couple years, I think he'd be great. He has a very high BB IQ, and he seems to be highly spoken of around the league. I think he had the job had Phoenix not cut loose D'Antoni. Could be a great young Coach in the making.

Would Jackson want to take a back seat and wait for 4 years though?

I'd be all for having him here, but would he want to wait that long?

well that's pretty random. I really don't think we'll be seeing any big name assistants this year. I mean if he wants to shake things up or start grooming some one he might add someone big next year, but LB guys are what we are going to be seeing.

The contract is for four years. I see LB turning it around changing his image from the Knicks and then riding off into the sunset in maybe 2 years. Which wouldn't be long if he had some kind off deal like dungy's asst. with the colts, the job is yours as soon as he's gone. I'm talk about Mark Jackson not the college asst.
