    Unhappy Smitty suffers a concussion

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/...th-concussion/
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith sat out practice today after suffering a concussion during the team’s preseason opener Saturday.

Smith sustained the injury when he made a leaping catch to pick up 19 yards. He stayed in the game after that, even though quarterback Matt Moore said he knew something was wrong with Smith.

The NFL has said that it realizes the importance of getting proper treatment to players who suffer concussions, but stories like this call into question whether the league is doing enough. Why did a player who suffered a concussion — and who exhibited symptoms such that a teammate could recognize something was wrong — continue to play and risk aggravating the concussion in a meaningless exhibition game?

Panthers coach John Fox described Smith as day-to-day. It’s probably just as well that the first-string offense gets some time practicing without Smith, seeing as they’re going to have to play without Smith for the first two games of the season while Smith serves his suspension for punching teammate Ken Lucas.
Hopefully it's only a mild one but I look at him sitting out the rest of preseason and the two game suspension as being somewhat of a blessing in disguise just let him rest up for his return against the Minnesota Vikings.

Plus we get to see more of Dwayne Jarrett with the first team.

In response to the article, you'd probably have to drag Smith out of the game (if it were during the regular season). The league would have to make a rule that forced coaches to pull players if there was a noticeable infirmity. However, Fox couldn't have noticed something wrong with Smith, because otherwise he would have pulled him from the game since it was preseason. In short, it'd be very hard to police this sort of thing.

Perhaps if Matt Moore's throws weren't consistently high enough that the receiver had to go up and leave himself vulnerable to a huge hit....

^He has that Jake Delhomme syndrome were he likes to throw up high balls to Smitty since he knows he's the only wide receiver on the team that can go up and catch it.

I rewatched the game and after the hit he seemed to get up very slow and yea a defensive player would have to break his legs to take him out of a game Smith has the biggest heart in the NFL.

Steve Smith is 5"9 most passes are high to him. I'm glad he'll be sitting out though. But it makes no sense for Smith to stay out there when he knows it's just a preseason game. I think Jarrett will show fans something this year. I really thought he'd do more last year but with four different QB's it's hard to get a rythme.

So, our quarterbacks are excused from throwing to everyone high because of Smitty's height? It's not just him they throw high to. It's just the most noticeable with Smitty since he gets the ball thrown to him 7 out of 10 drop backs.

It's nothing new though Jake has always been a QB known for taking risk with high throws especially when his targets are Smitty and Moose. I guess he knows both guys will always fight for balls whether they have single or double coverage on them. It has never been an issue though until most recently when he's been playing far from 100% which caused all those costly INT's during 2006 season.

To CarolinaKat: Dwayne Jarrett got hurt yesterday they were saying it was some type of leg injury and he got carted off the practice field hopefully we'll get a update today.

I hope Jarrett isn't seriously hurt. Since Smith is out for the first two games he'll be important...Maybe. We do have a better running game this year.

Wasn't Jake and undrafted free agent when we picked him up? Matt Moore is undrafted too. Can we find a QB thats worth drafting at some point? I actually like Moore but i won't cheer for him to play like i did David Carr last year. I got my wish and was disgusted with what i saw. We even went out and got Vinny, That showed how bad Carr was and that there was NO ONE appraently out there better then 40 plus Vinny.

    eaton_branden1,

How did you rewatch the game. I had to listen to the audio, Channelsurf didn't have a video. I would love to actually SEE the team even though they play again tomorrow.

I have a Digital video recorder came with my digital cable from Time Warner so I rewatched it on there.

And yea we picked up Jake as a free agent after the Saints let him go in 2003.
