I can answer any questions about this that you all may have but trust me this is looooooooooong overdue and it is absolutely the right move for the university. With the student body expected to grow to 40,000 in the next 15-20 years (currently at 22,000) and with the incredible level of growth that the university has had educationally since I've been here (one of the top research universities in the south) this moves makes so much sense on so many levels.
To answer your question about where they would play. The plan is to build an on-campus stadium that will at first sit 12,000 and will be expandable to 30,000 once the team enters the Football Bowl Subdivision (they will start in the Football Championship Subdivision). The money for the stadium and other facilities will be raised through PSLs (currently at 4,100 at $1000 a pop, that's over $4.1 million already) and from donors. All in all about $40 million will be needed to start this program and built the stadium by 2013.
If the $40 million is not raised in time then the back-up plan is to "clean up" Memorial Stadium and play there for two or maybe even three seasons while the rest of the money comes in and the stadium is built.
As a niner alum this makes me VERY happy![]()
