I like the short term, more than qualifying offer, but not wallace level pay contract. That sounds like its safe for us and he's getting more, with the promise of either we'll give a lot more next or he'll get traded somewhere where he can get that big big pay day.

We just traded Hammer for Diop, and it's well known that management offered the exact same deal this summer to him as he's on now. If management is willing to pay Diop 6.5 average over 5 years...what is Felton worth?

If I were Felton I'd certainly point that one out.

great topic.. i really don't think that we will trade felton, i believe that we will retain him

i'm in agreement with spectre/big slam, it will be a deal like wallace.. and i think if presented, he would take it. i don't like the idea of a long term contract, regardless of how much we are paying.. we need the short term contract in case DJ becomes really good and we can afford trading felton in the next three years

That's the best thing about Spectre's idea. If we do decide that DJ is the way we want to go and Felts is being paid $6 mil a season, it makes him very attractive to other teams and in a few years time and we should have no problem trading him while getting a good return.

    OR

He improves so much that we keep him on his good contract and trade DJ while Felts takes us to the promised land.

Before all that happens though, we have a starting quality PG on a very good deal and a starting quality back up PG still on his rookie contract so it's a win/win/win for us.

you nailed it...i hadn't thought about even the potential than in 3 years Felton becomes so good that we could trade DJ.

I really hope that things shake down like this (keep felton on a short term contract)

We need to keep his contract short though. I don't like 7 year long contracts as they become damn near impossible to trade unless the other team SERIOUSLY wants to make a move.

I wouldn't mind paying Ray in the 6-7 range on a 3 year deal, much like the one spectre and Slam are alluding to. That way, we pay reasonable money for his value to the team but also keep his contract appealing to other teams.

That is the key. Because if he becomes more expensive to us we lose our flexibility. And that is one of the single most important things for a GM: flexibility.

Ill be honest, on a shorter deal, I'd be willing to pay ray more than on a long deal... Its easier to move 8.25 mil flat with 2 years left than 7 mil escalating with 4 years left 9 times out of 10.

A rumor of Felton to Miami for Daquan Cook and others....I dont give it much thought though.

Felton will be able to get a 5-year deal (maximum allowed is 5 years) at the mid-level exception without a doubt....teams will overpay him at that rate so the Bobcats would be less likely to match the offer. That is the lowest deal I can see him taking.....I can also see him getting so much more from a team that is under the cap.

I fully expect Felton to get a 5 year deal this offseason and I don't see why he wouldn't want that.....
